In what was anticipated as one of the matches of the day, Garbine Muguruza powered past the fifth seed Elina Svitolina in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 at the Australian Open 2020. The Ukrainian was the favorite coming into the match. However, it was Garbine Muguruza who came out all guns blazing, hitting the ball with massive power and immaculate depth.

Taking the ball early and pounding Svitolina’s second serve, Garbine Muguruza raced to a 4-1 lead and did not look back after that. She broke again to take the first set 6-1. Despite the lead, it was Garbine Muguruza who came out with intensity and purpose in the second set. She broke Svitolina in the third game and went on to consolidate it. Immediately in  Svitolina’s next service game she had 5 break point opportunities that Sviolina had to fight away, in a pivotal 10 minute game.

Muguruza went on to put more pressure on Svolina’s next service game, conjuring up 2 break points and converted the first one with a powerful return of serve to go 5-2 up in the second set. She closed out the match in style, and will surely be one of the favorites to win another slam here down under in Australia.

Garbine Muguruza had 31 winners and 9 unforced errors in the entire match while Elina Svitolina didn’t play bad with 12 winners, and 12 unforced errors on her racquet.
