Garbine Muguruza has announced her return to active competition ahead of Australian Open 2020. The former world number one will be competing in the Hobart International in January.

“Hobart is a special place for me as it was where I won my first title on the WTA tour back in 2014. The people are so warm and friendly and I am looking forward to coming back.

How Was Garbine Muguruza’s 2019 season?

Muguruza’s 2019 season was well below expectations. The former Wimbledon champion would definitely have expected a better win loss record than 23-19.

Even though she was able to defend her crown at Monterrey, the rest of the season was a nightmare for the Spaniard. Her most embarrassing loss came in the first round of the Wimbledon where she lost 6-4,6-4 to World No 121 Beatriz Hadad Maia.

After starting the season as the World no 18, Muguruza fell 18 spots to finish 2019 as the World no 36.

Why Is The Hobart International Special For Garbine Muguruza?

Hobart holds a special place in the heart of Garbine Muguruza. The 26 year old won her first WTA title at Hobart in the year 2014. Back then, Muguruza was another qualifier trying to impress the tennis audiences with an upset or two. She was ranked no 58 bit went on to defeat seventh seed Klara Zakopolova in straight sets. Muguruza defied expectations and turned some heads as she finished the year as the world no 21.

The Hobart international 2020 will start from the Domain Tennis Centre from Saturday 11 January to Saturday 18 January. Muguruza is the latest to join the bandwagon with Svetlana Kuznetsova and Samantha Stosur  already confirming their participation.

Muguruza is again at the crossroads. She hopes to kick off a new beginning and Hobart again presents itself as her window of opportunity. Muguruza will work hard to ensure that Hobart again becomes the start of better times.
