It’s time to look back at the superhits of the year as 2023 comes to an end. It’s been yet another incredible year for the gaming industry and for gamers of course. A number of exciting titles made their way to pretty much all the platforms. From survival horror to open-world superhero adventures, all kinds of games were launched. And each one of them can be considered the best in the class.
Gamers can already look forward to 2024 with all the major projects planned, Rise of the Ronin, Hellblade II and more. But first, it’s time to sit down and evaluate the games that launched this year and find the best of them. Keeping up with that tradition of the year-end best-of lists, here’s a list of the top action RPGs that launched in 2023!

No doubt the 2023 Game of the Year (TGA 2023) is a CRPG at its heart. After all, it’s the latest installment in one of the most hardcore CRPG franchises of all time. But developer Larian Studios decided to take it one step further this time around, and they made it so that it can be played in the third person as an action RPG.
The gameplay mostly remains stat-based turn-based. The developers have also designed its quests to be flexible, so players can complete them in a number of ways. Even without even entering combat sometimes. The best part is, players can do all this with a co-op partner.
Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty
While Cyberpunk 2077 doesn’t make the list, Phantom Liberty is basically a turning point for this game, which is already a couple of years old. A whole new location, a bunch of new weapons, a brand-new story that’s even better than the original one, and a bunch of new and exciting characters. In terms of gameplay, it mostly remains the same, a first-person game with a real-time combat system. Players can choose to approach missions through stealth or go guns blazing. Both options are open. And let’s not forget a completely new relic skill tree that gives players a bunch of new skills to unlock.
This DLC makes up for the original game’s promise of a hardcore cyberpunk RPG.
Final Fantasy 16
This PlayStation 5 exclusive takes everything up a notch. It looks mind-blowing, it has a very dark Game of Thrones-like story, and most importantly, it takes the signature turn-based gameplay and turns it into something from Devil May Cry. While some may say it changes too much to be called a Final Fantasy game anymore, one can say it is an evolution of the Final Fantasy formula. And it’s incredible at what it does.
Here’s hoping this series keeps evolving in a similar direction and those boss fights keep getting larger.
Remnant 2
This is a soulslike turned shooter, and it is not disappointing in the least. Story be damned, all gamers need to know about this Remnant 2 is that they go from dimension to dimension, defeating bosses. And because this game is all about dimension-hopping, anything can appear in front of players at any time. From weird cities full of ruins to futuristic dystopias full of killer androids, nothing’s off the table here.
Do not miss this game; it is unlike any other action RPG on this list. Then again, the same thing can be said about any other game on this list.
Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty
This is the game fans get when Team Ninja decides to take Nioh into the open world. This game presents one with a vast, open world and a number of enemies to defeat. Players can choose from several classes to create their preferred character and go about their journey through a fictionalized medieval China.
But unlike Nioh, this game has a new gameplay feature, a jump move. If you ever wondered how Team Ninja would make Sekiro, this is the answer.
Lies of P
For every gamer out there awaiting a sequel or a remake of Bloodborne, this game would provide some solace. Developed by a Korean developer and a director who is very clearly a fan of Bloodborne, this game has everything that Bloodborne had. A dark, moody environment, with a haunting story to tell, and a very addictive core gameplay loop you cannot get enough of.
Just jump into Lies of P and do not be worried about those bosses; eventually, you will get them.
Hogwarts Legacy
The Harry Potter franchise has a massive fan following. Those fans have waited a very long time for a game that presented this world in its entirety and from the perspective of a fan. Hogwarts Legacy does exactly that. Avalanche Software really put all they had into this game. And no doubt it paid off in a big way.
Exploring Hogwarts, Hogsmeade, dueling, flying around on a broom, flying a hippogriff, the game has it all. Play this game if you ever wondered what it feels like to be a student at Hogwarts and make your own story in this world. Albeit, don’t expect Harry Potter since this game takes place way before his time.
Starfield
Bethesda spent eight years designing this world and developing this game. In many ways, their efforts have paid off. Starfield is one of the most expansive space simulation games out there. And it’s one of the most elaborate action games out there too. But do not go into this game expecting something like Skyrim or Fallout 4.
Starfield is a very good-looking and detailed space simulation experience for those with their expectations in check. For everyone else, maybe Star Citizen will be released someday.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
Of course, Tears of the Kingdom is on this list. The latest Legend of Zelda title is something special indeed. Some might call it an action-adventure game, but in many ways, it’s an action RPG. The way players get to choose what they do and how they do it, and the detailed nature of pretty much everything gamers do in this world. Be it crafting or creating new weapons using fuse, this game has an RPG vibe to it.
Hence, do not forget to give this game a go.
RoboCop: Rogue City
A first-person shooter set in old Detroit that is as faithful to the original movie as it can be. So much so that even the actor playing RoboCop in the original movie returns to play his role here. But it’s not a straightforward first-person shooter. It gives players numerous side quests and a moderately open world to explore. There are even dialogues one can choose, getting different responses or quest endings as a result.

Many of the games on this list are pretty short, but some take hundreds of hours to complete. And it is recommended they be completed before the year ends, as, from the looks of it, 2024 would be equally crowded with quality games.
