Sometimes game developers make really good games, then don’t follow it up with more. What a shame. Numerous video games launch every year, and a bunch of those games are sequels. And those sequels sometimes sell even more than their original counterparts. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, God of War: Ragnarok, and Spider-Man 2 are some examples of such games. All three of these titles sold way more than their predecessors. Hence, the market for sequels is never down, but only if they are sequels to some very successful titles.

With 2023 nearing its end, fans can look forward to new games next year. And if all the rumors and leaks are to be believed, next year could be even larger than 2023 for gamers. Besides the usual titles, such as Wolverine and Alone in the Dark, here are some sequels that could light up 2024 and beyond.

Dead Space Remake

EA Motive really put their heart and soul into making the recently launched Dead Space title, one of the best remakes of all time. They redesigned the map in such a way that it ended up being seamless. Players were free to roam around the fully unlocked map without engaging a single load screen.

Dead Space 2 needs this kind of treatment too. Here’s hoping EA Motive starts working on Dead Space 2 Remake the moment they are done with the previously announced Iron Man title.

Alpha Protocol

Obsidian Entertainment is the master of role-playing games. They are known for designing unmatched experiences and intriguing game worlds. They developed games like Fallout New Vegas, Knights of the Old Republic 2, and The Outer Worlds. All these games have a bunch of things in common with each other, most importantly the fact that they are all role-playing games.

But then  they decided to do something unique. That’s when they ended up designing Alpha Protocol, a stealth action role-playing game where the protagonist is a spy. It’s a unique concept, and the game lives up to that concept. Sadly, thanks to some licensing issues between Sega and Obsidian Alpha Protocol, it is nowhere to be found nowadays. But it would be great if they decided to come together once again and give their fans a sequel.

Metal Gear Solid: Revengeance

Hideo Kojima’s Metal Gear series is all about stealth. Hide through pistol magazines to distract guards and then take them down. But when Platinum Games got their hands on this series, they literally turned it around.

This game stars Raiden, and he has lost pretty much every limb of his body. When he is given a bunch of prosthetics, he goes back to his enemies with full force. But he is not fighting from the shadows; he is taking them head-on and cutting them down one limb at a time. It would be great if Konami once again let Platinum Games make a game in this series.

Okami

Before Platinum Games was born, pretty much every member of this studio worked at Clover Studio. This was a Capcom-owned studio, and they made a very interesting game for their publisher. This game was called Okami. Okami puts players in the shoes of a mythological wolf who is on a journey to defeat a dark power and save the world.

This was one of the most creative Zelda likes at the time, and it still has a massive fanbase, as proven by the fact that the remaster of the original game sold like hotcakes. Hence, it would be fun if Capcom once again called upon Platinum Games to develop a sequel for them.

Bully

Yes, Rockstar Games has just released the first trailer for their upcoming game, GTA 6. But that game was expected to show up at some point; it is their trademark franchise after all. Fans want Bully 2, the sequel to a unique little game Rockstar Games released years ago for PS3, Wii U, PC, and Xbox.

Today, the original game is everywhere, on smartphones and consoles. And just like Okami, the fanbase of Bully too wants this game to return someday. Here’s hoping Bully is the next game Rockstar Games works on after GTA 6.

Shadow of the Colossus

Team ICO was one of the most talented group of developers who knew well enough how to make gamers feel things. They started this with ICO, and they continued this tradition of hurting gamers’ feelings with Shadow of the Colossus. A game where players have to defeat a bunch of towering monsters in order to save the one they love.

It turns out they get double-crossed, and by killing those huge monsters, they actually free a dark spirit. Then they get killed. It was a sad ending, just in the spirit of what Team ICO does. But this game needs a sequel; it needs someone to come and take care of that spirit, as the world is now in peril. Maybe now that Team ICO and Japan Studios are both gone, Bluepoint can work on a sequel?

Demon Souls

The game that started the Souls series. It became a cult hit years after it launched, receiving a negative critical reception and being overlooked by most gamers. Eventually, when this game made its way to the West, people started noticing its brilliance.

It was lauded by almost everyone, so much so that director Hidetaka Miyazaki was given another project to work on. This game turned out to be Dark Souls. Now that developer FromSoftware and director Miyazaki have established themselves with excellent games like Bloodborne and Elden Ring, it would be great to see a sequel to Demon Souls too.

This game plays like an old-time noir story, and it’s excellent. The humor, the voice acting, and the twist—everything was perfect. Now, people are more appreciative of games like these, and it would be interesting for some modern studios to build a sequel for this game.
