Final Fantasy has become a very mainstream franchise nowadays. Many gamers who never even looked at role-playing games are now fawning over the newer games in this series. Credit where credit is due: Square Enix is doing a great job making some very attractive video games. So, it makes sense that fans of these games would look around for other similar titles in this genre.
Lucky for them, there’s no shortage of Final Fantasy-like games in the industry. Libraries of many gaming consoles are full of games that are very close to Final Fantasy in gameplay as well as quality. Here are 5 such games:

It might not look like most of the modern Final Fantasy titles, but it is just as fun. This game takes most of its ideas from Chrono Trigger, which was an excellent Final Fantasy rival back in the PS2 days. This game brings back the isometric view of classic turn-based RPGs to the modern era and looks just incredible doing it.
It features a massive world to explore and an exciting combat system. Best of all, it is available pretty much everywhere.
Octopath Traveler 2
Back when every video game developer and publisher decided that audiences were not interested in those turn-based RPGs, this game’s predecessor came and changed everything. Developers at Square Enix even made Octopath Traveler look like those old-time games but with a mix of modern and vintage pixelated visuals. Octopath Traveler 2 is the expansion of that game’s ideas in every way imaginable.
Once again, the game features eight protagonists. All of them are on a mission, and it is up to the players to reach their destination first. With a number of jobs, numerous side missions, and a very good-looking pixelated world to just glare at, this game lacks nothing.
Bravely Default
Another game that opened Square Enix’s eyes to modern turn-based RPGs. Starring a bunch of eccentric characters exploring the world of Luxendarc. This is not an isometric game; it is presented from a more detailed third-person overhead angle. This game was launched in 2012 for Nintendo 3Ds, and many were surprised when it ended up blowing up the sales charts. Everyone was talking about Bravely Default.
It was such a success that its sequel was released for the Nintendo Switch and PC. And that game is even more beautiful and enjoyable to play.
Dragon Quest XI
This is yet another series by Square Enix that is both a rival and a companion to the Final Fantasy franchise. This game is played from a straightforward third-person perspective. Players explore a vast and vibrant world in Erdrea as they go on a mission to free their world from the grasp of a very dark and evil force.
Once again, this game has turn-based combat, and it’s much more fun than one would give it credit. Besides being turn-based, the battle system allows players to freely move around the battlefield too.
Kingdom Hearts 3
Years ago, someone at Square Enix came up with the unusual idea of combining Final Fantasy’s anime aesthetics with Disney’s cartoon characters. They even followed through with that idea and approached Disney, and the Kingdom Hearts franchise was born. While some might not be able to grasp this idea, there are millions of fans of this franchise. And that’s why Kingdom Hearts 3 is so special. It’s a very beautiful Japanese role-playing game with a story that only hardcore fans can grasp at this point. But it looks good, and its combat is something very interesting.

Unlike most games mentioned on this list, this one does not have turn-based combat. Kingdom Hearts 3’s combat is more hack and slash with a mix of some magical powers. It looks very beautiful in action and is fun to take part in. This series has never failed gamers who were out looking for something outlandish, and this latest game would not disappoint them either.
