In a year that was packed with some brilliant games, November marked the release of Super Mario RPG remake. The game is nothing short of a small miracle. Even after all these years, it seems somewhat surprising that Nintendo green-lit an RPG game starring none other than their jumpy plumber. And fans ended up with a game that really exceeded expectations.

It’s only natural if many fans of the Super Mario RPG find themselves wanting more of the same after finishing it. After all, a well-crafted and humorous role-playing experience is not something gamers see every day. Of course, players can replay the game. But if you’re looking for something new, here are a few such Nintendo Switch games that you can play if you love the Super Mario RPG Remake.

Sea of Stars

Fans of old-school RPGs have looked for a similar experience in modern games. The good thing is that developers nowadays, especially some really talented indie developers, are aware of this demand. They respond to it with some really well-made games that take players on a pleasant nostalgia trip. Sea of Stars is one such game. Mainly, it is inspired by the Chrono-trigger series and really shows how familiar its developers are with that original.

This game follows two chosen heroes who have the powers of the sun and moon. They are tasked with fighting the darkness, using their powers and saving their world. It has a very detailed combat system, very similar to that of Super Mario RPG, that even allows for combos. Sometimes those combos deal more damage to one’s enemies, while other times they heal your party. One thing is for sure: it’s a very well-made game that every old-school RPG fan must try.

South Park: The Stick of Truth

Over the years, South Park has established itself as something of a masterclass in satirical storytelling. When eight-generation consoles were about to hit the stores, the creators of the show, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, saw an opportunity. They partnered with Obsidian to create the ultimate South Park gaming experience. This game was The Stick of Truth.

It is an RPG that takes players throughout this quiet little Colorado mountain town on a quest. The game boasts visuals from the show itself, and its humor is also in place. But there are a few things that make it even better.

The first is its turn-based combat, which allows for player input mid-attack for bonus damage. Second is the fact that this game was the first time the creators mapped the whole town. Full of references and new content for fans, this game is a dream come true for both RPG fans and fans of the series.

Undertale

Nintendo’s Mother series is something of an oddity. Imagine a developer and publisher that is known for fun and colorful games about fantastical adventures and plumbers saving princesses, making a dark RPG. It speaks to the developers’ versatility. But they abruptly ended the series and never released most games in the West. However, a fan called Toby Fox decided he had waited enough and developed his own spiritual successor to that series called Undertale.

This is a game for three types of gamers: those who love old-school RPGs, those who love turn-based RPGs, and those who would like to try something weird and different. Undertale goes from a kid going on an adventure to twisted monsters saying twisted things in a matter of a few levels. Over that, it has a bunch of brilliantly designed boss fights that would just blow one’s mind.

Octopath Traveler

Yet another game that developers and publishers launched to remind players of “those good times.” This one brings back memories of those old turn-based final fantasy games with pixelated visuals. It’s so inspired by those games that this game itself has pixelated visuals. Developed using Unreal Engine 4, it features advanced lighting, 3D panels like layered scenery, and some well-designed and detailed characters, all showcased in a pixelated manner.

But the developers had decided that they would want this game to be something more than just a throwback. Hence, they added a twist; as the name suggests, players have the option to follow eight different paths in this game. Each with a different character and each gives a different experience. Players have eight characters in their party too, each with their own distinctive ability. Someone is a thief, while someone is a seductress, and all of them work in tandem to reach their individual end goals.

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle

No, this game is not an RPG by a long shot, but it is a game that gives Mario fans something unique in terms of premise and gameplay. Mario and his pals travel to an unusual place where they find Ubisoft’s Rabbids, who are their usual silly selves. They dress stupidly and act quirky. In their quest to escape from that world, Mario and the Rabbids join forces to fight a sinister power.

The combat in this game is turn-based but more grid-based than straightforward turn-based combat. This game looks unique and gives fans a good enough challenge to keep them on their toes. For hardcore Super Mario fans, this game is a must-have.
