Upset PC users already know by now that GTA 6 won’t release for PC at launch. However, gamers are having various doubts regarding the reason Rockstar Games has decided to skip the platform altogether. Now, a former dev, who previously worked at the renowned studio, has revealed why the game will take a long time before arriving on PC.
Ever since the record breaking GTA 6 trailer launched, players have been in awe of it. But the sad part is the fact that Rockstar Games will only stick to PS5 and Xbox Series X\S to release the game. There’s no mention of a PC version – at least for now. Also, there seems to be no actual technical reason given by the developer on why it has decided to adapt this approach. However, a former employee has recently tried to explain the details behind this situation.

Mike York, who’s a former Rockstar Games animator, runs a YouTube channel where he shares his views and opinions on gaming. Following the reveal of the much-awaited trailer, he’s been dropping various videos while breaking down little details from the clip. However, in a recent video, he talked about the most talked-about question doing rounds on the internet – why GTA 6 is not coming to PC?
According to Mike York, there are two basic reasons why Rockstar’s team has decided to not release GTA 6 on PC at launch.
- The first one is to focus on what sells.
- The second reason is regarding the large amount of time it takes to work on a PC port of games like Grand Theft Auto.
One can understand this point by remembering that GTA V came out in September 2013, but its PC version was launched almost two years after, in April 2015.
Mike said, “the developers want to make it the best it can possibly be. They have to work out all these little bugs that they haven’t been working on–they’ve put them to the side, they haven’t seen them yet.” Further, he added, “One of the main things I want to touch on is that the reason why a PC port comes later and not the first thing that comes out is because they want to prioritize what sells.”
He explained that previously, Rockstar Games observed that PlayStation was selling very well. “So what the developer would do is they would focus all their energy on making sure the PlayStation port and the PlayStation game worked really well. Then they would kind of port it to the Xbox–usually they’d do it at the same time.” He also revealed that during the time of GTA V, they concentrated more on PS3 and pushed the game to its limit because PS3 “was kind of better hardware.”

Furthermore, he said that another reason “why a PC port will take so long is because it’s different architecture and different kind of components. They have to accommodate for all of these different things that can happen.” In short, more testing is required on a PC than consoles. “You already have to test the game a ton in order to get it to work, so a PC version is even harder.”
While PC gamers wait to find out when GTA 6 will come to the PC, the trailer confirmed it will release on the PS5 and Xbox series X/S at some point in the year 2025. However, an exact date hasn’t been confirmed just yet.

Meanwhile, PC players can expect a long wait. The port will definitely take more time for various types of tests before making sure it’s ready for PC users. After all, they wouldn’t want to follow up a successful console lauch with a shaky release on the PC. If one has to assume, PC owners will have to wait for at least one year after the initial launch on next-gen consoles. A PC port can be expected to arrive by 2026 or maybe early 2027.
