In Lethal Company, players delve into a horror-filled experience that intricately combines both horrifying and humorous elements. The game was made by Zeekerss, who are known for making games in the horror genre. So with that said, what makes Lethal Company any different?

Lethal Company is a game whose lore is shrouded in mystery. Players learn more about the setting they are put in while playing the game. The story is primarily driven by the discovery of logs left behind by a character named Sigurd, a member of a crew that came before the current player’s team. So let’s take a look at the logs and discover what the game is all about.

The Mysteries of Lethal Company

The story begins in the year 2543, with players landing on various moons, their main objective being to collect scrap for the mysterious and unnamed company they work for. Throughout the game, the player and their team start asking questions as they notice the absence of human inhabitants despite signs of previous human presence on these moons.

A crucial aspect of the lore comes from the logs left by Sigurd, which are found scattered throughout the game. These logs, dated back to 1968, reveal a history spanning over 500 years. These entries provide a first-person account of his experiences, thoughts, and growing suspicions about the company’s true motives.

The company itself adds to the mystery. The main hub of operations is a massive building on an ocean moon, where players trade collected scrap through a slot named Jeb. Jeb is not a person, but rather a mass of tentacles that reaches out from a slot near the window of the company building. Players trade scrap with Jeb, who seems to be the entity responsible for receiving the collected items.

The company seems to control every aspect of the game, from contracts to currency. Even the currency is simply named ‘company credits’ adding to the mystery. Workers sign contracts for seemingly short durations, possibly a season. The turnover rate is exceptionally high due to frequent deaths, suggesting a dangerous work environment. Even the hiring process of the game looks sketchy, as workers don’t interact with real people. Everything is orchestrated by the voice of the company over the phone.

While playing the game, players will see a good deal of propaganda-style posters on the ship walls that hint at a state of economic decline or famine. A scarcity of resources on Earth drives the need for interplanetary scrap collection. And that’s how we have our job in the game.

The ship’s terminal, with a copyright from 2084 to 2108, serves as an essential source of information. As it tells us that the game is based quite a few years into the future. A sticky note directs players to access Sigurd’s logs by typing “Sigurd” into the terminal. Sigurd’s logs, starting from August 22, 1968, reveal his growing skepticism about the company. The crew, including Richard, Desmond, Jess, and Sigurd himself, begin to question the purpose of their scrap collection as they find items of little apparent value.

What do we learn from the Logs?

In the logs, Sigard describes his experiences during a visit to the company building, where he hears inexplicable sounds from behind the walls. The scary setting of the mission leads the crew to ask questions about the company that have signed up to work for.

Sigard decides to use a walkie-talkie near the company building’s wall, which leads him to learn about one of the company’s secrets. Like talking to voices in the walls, a golden planet getting gobbled up by a beast, and the crew trying to figure out where the company calls were coming from. The crew attempts to trace the source of company phone calls, revealing that the calls are coming from a group of people scattered across the solar system.

As the crew gets more careful, they start getting the hang of the strange place they’re in. The last logs, written by Desmond, spill the beans on a horrifying truth—workers are unknowingly feeding a monstrous thing, and their whole existence revolves around serving this never-satisfied creature.

Throughout the game, players will interact with the logs saved by Sigurd as they uncover what went down with one of the previous teams to work on the moon excursions. In the end, the fate of Sigurd remains unknown as the logs stop one day and it is believed that this is due to the season getting over for which the contract lasts. But considering the game’s eerie setting, we cannot say for sure what happened with the last excursion team.

Most of what we learn about the lore is from the logs saved by Sigurd. As players continue to explore moons and feed the company’s motives, they will figure out what the company has been up to over the years and hopefully stop its evil doings in its tracks.
