Remakes and remasters are becoming the norm nowadays. From Sony to Nintendo, every publisher and platform holder releases their games on new platforms with a new look. The Last of Us Part 1, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Demon Souls, and Metroid Remastered are just some of the examples of the best remakes out there. But there are still a bunch of games that remain without any updates.

There are plenty of fans all over the world asking several developers and publishers to make it work. And it looks like, in many instances, they are listening. So following the trend of remakes, here’s a list of games from the biggest franchises that would be great to remake!

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Ocarina of Time was released for the N64 25 years ago. The game was Link and Zelda’s first 3D adventure. While many fans bought this game just for its dimension shift, some got it because they were hardcore fans. Either way, both groups had an unforgettable experience. Everything in this game was special. Its music, its world, and its characters, especially Epona.

It would be an excellent thing to see this game get a second life on newer Nintendo consoles. With the amount of horsepower that the Nintendo Switch has, and with the amount of power its successor, Switch 2, is said to have, it would be hard to imagine Nintendo releasing it for the Switch 2 console and not using its full potential.

Given the fact that 2023 marked the 25 anniversary of this game, it’s only natural for its fans to expect something new and special from Nintendo. They can start by taking The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening. They literally transformed that classic adventure game into something special. This is exactly the kind of treatment that Nintendo needs to give Ocarina of Time.

Splinter Cell Chaos Theory

When one thinks of stealth action, some names just have to come to mind, like Metal Gear Solid, and Splinter Cell. While there are a bunch of other franchises, like Thief and Deus Ex, those fall into a more niche category, as they are closer to simulators and RPGs than action. Konami recently announced a remake of the best game in the Metal Gear series, Snake Eater. However, that announcement led to a polarizing response from fans, as they thought not having series creator Hideo Kojima involved in the development could somewhat ruin the game. The point is that it is getting a remake, and Konami knows exactly what game to remake; they chose right.

When it comes to the Splinter Cell series, fans consider Chaos Theory to be the best game. And there’s a reason for that. This game refined every mechanic and every tool that made the first two games worth playing. It had funny dialogues, and its story mode was just too good. And who can forget that excellent Spies vs. Mercenaries multiplayer mode?

If Ubisoft has to work on a remake, they should be remaking Splinter Cell Chaos Theory. The game featured Sam Fisher in his prime and at his quirkiest.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein

This game was released in simpler times. Times when a first-person shooter did not need a microtransaction-filled multiplayer. And it was long enough to justify a $60 price tag. Return to Castle Wolfenstein is a game in which Captain B.J. Blazkowicz finds himself trapped in a remote medieval castle controlled by the Nazis. They are doing some weird experiments, and B.J. is to first escape the place and then find a way to stop their weird paranormal experiments.

From action to stealth to horror, this game had a touch of just about everything one can imagine. There are numerous guns to use, an equal number of enemies to fight, and a lot of fun to be had. While this game was not the last of the Wolfenstein games, it sure marked the end of an era where games with massive levels were not called open-world. Its levels were so huge that it was very easy to get lost in them, and they were full of secrets too.

It would be really exciting if Bethesda ever decided to revisit this game. Just imagine and ID Tech 6 or 7-powered games in this franchise. It would just be insane on another level.

Killzone

Killzone was the game Sony tasked Guerilla Games to make as a Halo killer. Little did they know that they would not need Killzone to kill Halo; eventually, it would succumb under the weight of its own popularity. While Killzone failed to kill Halo, it still became a distinctive presence in the gaming industry. A shooter featuring a historical war between two factions.

There was hardly anything special about this game, but it played just too well. Guerilla kept this consistent too; every Killzone game over the years was an insanely good-looking and playing title. If someone does not believe this, they are free to go ahead and check out videos of Killzone 3 and Shadow Fall. Killzone needs a remake. Sony really needs a good shooter, and this series is just too good to leave behind.

Resistance

Today, Insomniac Games is one of the biggest names in gaming. all thanks to their Spider-Man games. But that does not mean they did not make any good games before that. Insomniac developed Sunset Overdrive and Resistance too. They have always had a thing for the weird and quirky. The story of Resistance was this: A bunch of aliens attack the Earth, and people start fighting back. This was the gist of this series of games.

But two things made them stand out: their cooperative mode and their simplicity. In a time when shooters were trying to one-up each other by doing weird things like changing gravity in Inversion, Resistance kept it simple. But fun-to-use weapons, a straightforward story, and a split-screen co-op mode made these games insanely fun to play.

PlayStation now has Insomniac Games as its own. Resistance Games would do much better now if the developers decided to implement their experience from developing all the recent games for them. It would be good to see the series return as something that it deserved to be back then.
