What makes a year good for gaming? Good new IPs, or much-awaited sequels? Or maybe some surprise Indie releases? 2023 had it all! Fans of many major franchises and developers even saw their favorite games make a comeback. Further, there were sequels to some of the best games around. And finally, there were a bunch of new IPs that debuted this year too. Spider-Man 2, Alan Wake 2, Lies of P, and Baldur’s Gate 3 are just some of the many brilliant games that came out this year. With such a high bar set this year, what can we expect in 2024?
What will 2024 bring to the table? Would it be better than what came this year or not? These questions will be lingering in the minds of many fans. The year will kick off with a PS5 remaster of The Last of Us 2. But what about new games? The answer to this question is very simple. It may be equally brilliant, maybe even better. And here are some reasons why.
Wolverine

It would be a shame if one discounted this upcoming superhero game. After all, it is the first game in around 14 years that would have focused mainly on Wolverine. Over that, the game is being developed by none other than Insomniac Games, the developers of the much-lauded Spider-Man series. Their recent title, Spider-Man 2, has already made its way to one of the best superhero games ever made. It even earned a GOTY nomination for the upcoming TGA.
Wolverine is said to be very different from Spider-Man. It is being said that Insomniac Games looks to make this game pretty gory, which fits. They are supposedly going for an 18 or M rating for this game. Hence, this PlayStation 5 exclusive would be something to watch out for!
Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth
Yet another title that has made its fans wait for numerous years. The original game launched for PlayStation 1 in 1997. Meanwhile, the first installment in these remakes, called Final Fantasy VII Remake, launched in 2020. This would be the second episode in the trilogy of remakes, coming after four years of the first one.
It is going to take the story told by Remake forward, all the while adding a bunch of new gameplay features to it. Recently, the producer of the game even suggested how they have added specific mini-games to it that can even be played while on Wheelie, the name they have given to a Segway.
Silent Hill 2 Remake
Another remake of a very lauded original title Silent Hill 2 was a game that everyone loved at launch. It is a game that no one has forgotten either. Many consider it to be the best game in the Silent Hill series, and justifiably so. It features a story that no one can forget—its social commentary, its music, and its treatment of heavy psychological themes—all of which were just mind-blowing.
The fact that such a masterpiece is making its way to a modern generation of consoles in and of itself is a big deal. The developer is Bloober Team. They are known for developing games like Layers of Fear and The Blair Witch. They are developing it using Unreal Engine 5 and are suggesting some interesting additions that might make their way to it.
Metroid Prime 4
Nintendo announced this game for the Nintendo Switch with the console itself. It’s been years since that happened, and that first-person shooter is nowhere to be seen. There is a solid reason for this too. Earlier, this game was handed over to Namco Bandai to develop. And they even made sizeable progress by 2020 or 2021. However, Nintendo did not like the direction they were taking the game. They then brought in Retro Studios, the creators of the Metroid Prime series.
Currently, Metroid Prime 4 is being developed by Retro Studios and probably by Namco. Fans have not seen anything in regards to that game other than a logo, and there are some heavy chances that it will launch in 2024. Maybe with their new piece of hardware?
Nintendo Switch 2 or Super Nintendo Switch
Of course there is a console in this list. This list talks about all the things that would make 2024 a great year for gaming. And if Nintendo ends up unveiling and releasing this console sometime next year, this alone will make the year more exciting than 2023.
It’s a much-awaited console and a long time coming. The Nintendo Switch has been a successful console despite its technical shortcomings, but that does not mean people love it. They cannot wait for news on an upgraded console any longer. And the number of rumors and leaks fans have seen over the last few months only means the reveal is closer than anyone can expect. And that means the launch might end up happening sometime next year.
GTA 6
If this list had nothing else and GTA 6 was the only game on it, that would be okay too. Such is the game. GTA is one of the fastest-selling franchises in gaming.
