Recently, an Australian YouTuber took the internet by an unexpected pleasant surprise when they posted, “I Made a Nintendo PlayStation.” From the looks to the gameplay features, it looked everything like the good old days. Quite evidently, this upload by James Channel will take you down memory lane and leave you impressed with the creator’s phenomenal engineering skills.
As seen in the video, after dedicating hours of work to engineering, the creator tested the new Nintendo PlayStation by playing the original Grand Theft Auto. The game runs smoothly and does give you the feel of exclusivity. And why not? It’s only the second symbol of Sony X Nintendo to work actively today.
“Nintendo PlayStation is a real thing. It really exists. It was showcased at the 1991 Consumer Electronics Show right before Nintendo very publicly kicked Sony to the curb. As a result there’s only one working Nintendo PlayStation in the world and last time it sold it went for more than my house.”
Something a lot of fans may not know is that the Japanese gaming powerhouse and Sony’s paths were once closely intertwined. So much so that, like mentioned earlier, they even made a console. So how did they go from there to becoming fierce rivals?
Nintendo reportedly tried suing Sony
The video game market crashed in 1983. Following the crash, Nintendo was quick to rebuild. And in the process, they even teamed up with Sony. While they persisted in creating SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System) accessories, such as a brief modem available only in Japan, Sony concentrated on its core technological business and co-developed a novel type of CD-ROM in 1986 with Philips Electronics, known as the CD-ROM/XA.

With the intention of creating the Super Nintendo’s first disc-based system, they approached Sony to begin development of a CD-ROM add-on in response to the news of this innovative technology and to take advantage of their already-established partnership. In 1988, a contract was reached whereby Sony developed the technology and Nintendo expanded the Play Station! However, it’s after this that things went downhill.
Nintendo quietly made a deal with Philips to work on another disc-based SNES whilst cancelling their deal with Sony. Alas, this deal didn’t last long. But after, they tried to sue Sony for using the CD-ROM that they made during their partnership. However, Sony won and thus, they were able to popularize the CD-ROM.
