Lariain Studios initially launched Baldur’s Gate 3 for the PC and soon after that, the Xbox and PlayStation Ports were out. The game is praised for its storyline, multiplayer mode, and character customization among many other things. While it is an isometric top-down view game, it does require a powerful system to run.

When it comes to current-gen consoles, the PS5 and the Xbox Series X are two extremely powerful systems. But when the game was tested out on the systems, the difference between the two became clear.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is a game that is more accessible to play on the PC. While porting a game can lead to difficulties, the PlayStation 5 port performs quite well. Although the game has a few corners that still need to be polished, the performance of the port on the system is quite impressive.

The PS5 version has seen numerous updates in the three months since the last evaluation. Visual changes include slightly more diffuse shadows and higher resolution blood decals and water appearance.

Recent updates have shifted to dynamic resolutions in Console Quality Mode, maintaining 1440p quality but with improved performance. Performance mode now runs at 1080p internally, using FSR 2 to upscale to 1440p.

The initial poor CPU-bound performance, especially in crowded areas, has been substantially improved in the PS5. Frame rates in both modes have increased, with a more stable experience overall.

Visually, PS5 and Xbox Series X are closely matched, but some differences are noted. Series X ground surfaces appear slightly higher, and anisotropic filtering quality takes a hit compared to PS5. Water differences and overall visual settings are generally comparable.

Both Quality and Performance modes on Series X deliver a good-looking image on a 4K TV. Performance mode consistently hits its 60fps target, with occasional minor drops in town areas. Quality mode generally maintains 30fps but may struggle in demanding spots, offering a substantial upgrade from the launch version.

On the other hand, the Series S exhibits lower shadow quality and level of detail compared to Series X. Resolution is 1080p, resulting in a softer image with more aliasing, but still visually acceptable. Series S targets 30fps and performs similarly to Series X in quality mode, struggling in demanding spots. Split Screen Co-op is omitted on Series S due to development difficulties related to limited RAM.

Xbox Series ports are considered a qualified success, as players get to take advantage of the 60FPS at 4k on the series X. Microsoft recently made a blog post about players losing their save files on the Xbox systems. While Microsoft works on a fix, they have advised players to adhere to precautions while turning their systems off to avoid data loss.
