GTA 6 finally got its first trailer. And this is easily one of the biggest moments in the video game industry this year. It looks like Rockstar Games’ work on the newest version of the RAGE engine has paid off. Meanwhile, there is some disappointment with regard to this game’s launch date. But there is one more point to note. GTA 6 will have a piece missing from all the previous GTA installments.

Co-founder of Rockstar Games, Dan Houser will not be the main writer for GTA 6. He has been writing for the series as one of the primary writers for a very long time. However, GTA 6 might be the first game to be released without his involvement.

Will lack of Dan Houser’s involvement affect GTA 6?

When GTA 4 launched back in 2008, fans could not get enough of that game. But one thing got praise more than anything else. And that was its protagonist, Niko Bellic. He was seen as the most grounded and believable protagonist a GTA game had ever had. Now ,this character was grounded by the efforts of Dan Houser.

He then went on to do one better with Red Dead Redemption. An ex-outlaw who had to search the Wild West for his ex-gang members. He had layers. He was a dangerous outlaw looking to mend his ways for the sake of his family. The story took a number of twists and turns, but protagonist John Marston remains the most interesting part of it. Dan also did the same with GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2.

From Bully to Red Dead Redemption 2, Dan Houser made every character as interesting and grounded as he could. So yes, if he is not part of the writer’s team for GTA 6, it would make a huge difference. Before he had started writing these games, the characters were more like caricatures. Either inspired by movies or a combination of cliches. For example, Tommy Vercetti in GTA Vice City was nothing but Al Pacino from Scarface, and Sand Andreas’ CJ was a straightforward gangster on a quest to bring back his gang’s glory days.

No matter who writes this game, it would be hard to bring what Dan brought to the table. But that doesn’t mean Dan Houser won’t be included at all. While he left Rockstar Games, we can’t entirely be sure that while he’s not the main writer, he wasn’t involved at all.

No confirmation of his exclusion

While many fans are worried that other writers may not do as good a job as he did, there’s no confirmation that he did not participate in the writing of GTA 6. The development of GTA 6 started back in 2014 to some extent, and Dan Houser left the company back in 2020 and founded his own company called Absurd Ventures. There’s a high chance that he completed the script for GTA 6 before leaving.

If this is the case, then it would be the last game in the series to have his input. Hence, this game’s launch would be an even bigger deal than it is currently. And if he is involved, it will surely reflect in the way the characters are written. While there is no confirmation of his involvement or lack thereof, let’s hope Dan Houser himself confirms the matter.
