The world of Australian football is mourning as it bids farewell to beloved former Fitzroy captain and esteemed Adelaide Crows recruiter, Matt Rendell. An AFL legend who will be fondly remembered

The 64-year-old AFL legend passed away following a heart attack he experienced over the weekend while taking his dog for a walk. He was discovered and promptly transported to a hospital in the southeastern part of Melbourne, where he received intensive care.

The former ruckman had a remarkable career spanning from 1981 to 1992. During this time, he played 164 games for Fitzroy and an additional 13 games for the Brisbane Bears in 1992. A celebrated figure in Australian football, Rendell was honored with two Best and Fairest awards. He also achieved an All-Australian status twice during his time at Fitzroy.  After his playing career, he transitioned to club administration and recruiting, making notable contributions at St Kilda, Adelaide, and Collingwood. 

In recent years, Rendell found success in the media industry, working with The Age and SEN.  The AFL, on behalf of Rendell’s wife Leonie, released a statement expressing profound sadness about his condition: “It is with great sadness that I am releasing this statement in regards to the condition of Matthew Rendell.” “The Rendell family would like to express gratitude towards everyone who has been supportive at this time,” the statement further read.

When the official account of AFL tweeted the news of Matt Rendell’s death, tributes and condolences started pouring in from fans. 

One fan wrote, “A man ahead of his time in terms of recognizing and drafting young talent. Will be sorely missed.”

Another user lamented the loss, reminiscing about the fond memories of the old Fitzroy days.

A user also shared that he met Rendell on Saturday and he was truly a gentleman.
