After an incredibly entertaining Men’s World Cup last year, this year’s Women’s World Cup is set to be the next footballing spectacle. In the buildup to the magnum opus on the 20th this month, there are some talking points amongst fans. Numerous debates, including the “one love” armband debate to England’s injury woes attracted the spotlight at one point in time. However, the one topic that takes center stage above them all is Megan Rapinoe’s retirement and threepeating the World Cup.
Last weekend, the USWNT legend dropped a bombshell with her retirement announcement. While everyone knew it would come at some point in time, none were actually prepared to soak this in. It looks like just like us, Rapinoe is going through the same trouble in processing the decision.

Before her retirement announcement, the media was buzzing with rumors. After she confirmed the retirement rumors, Rapinoe looked like she underwent a tough time dealing with her decision. Speaking to BBC, the soccer legend acknowledged this feeling and justified her retirement.
“Obviously I’m 38 years old, I’m not going to be playing forever and it just always feels weird for me to have something settled and feel at peace and to not answer a question honestly,” Rapinoe said. She then shared the positive side of the announcement – a methodical mind leads to a clear focus aka the World Cup.

“We don’t have to get questions every time, every single game. It’s just kind of out there and I can just really enjoy it and focus on trying to win the tournament,” ended the USWMNT legend optimistically.
Nevertheless, the USWNT team deals with the exciting prospect of setting an unprecedented record.

Will Megan Rapinoe & team manage a third consecutive World Cup win?
While every World Cup comes with its own expectations, this one will be extra heavy for the USWNT due to two reasons. Firstly, the team has a solid chance of achieving a three-peat in this World Cup. Secondly, the entire country would love to end Megan Rapinoe’s final World Cup appearance on a high. With expectations high, will the USWNT live up to its billing or succumb to it?
