In the hyper-competitive NFL, success demands more than athletic prowess. It requires strategy, culture, and development—a formula the Los Angeles Rams have mastered to nurture rising stars like Blake Corum. With 3,737 rushing yards and 58 touchdowns from his Michigan days, the running back and kickoff returner entered the 2024 NFL Draft carrying high expectations.
In a recent episode of the EssentiallySports – Think Tank podcast, Corum shared insights with our host, Trey Holder, detailing how the Rams’ strategic mentorship, forward-thinking approach to player development, and tailored recruitment have accelerated his growth and fostered a strong sense of team camaraderie.
Selected 83rd overall, he joined a star-studded roster featuring Kyren Williams and Darrell Henderson Jr., under the guidance of head coach Sean McVay. Yet, adapting to the professional level has tested his resilience. At 5’8” and 213 pounds, Corum defies the traditional running back mold, forcing him to carve out a unique role within the Rams’ offense — a challenge he’s embraced with determination. Learn more about how the Rams’ innovative strategies are reshaping rookie integration and maximizing player potential.

Beyond the Field: The Los Angeles Rams’ Strategy for Building a Unified Core
“Coach Mcvey is an offensive guru. His memory, the way he calls plays, it’s phenomenal. I’ve never seen anything like it,” recalled Corum. He shared how, despite the complexities of joining a stacked offensive roster, he has found a place for himself. Most of this has been possible due to the franchise’s strategy of implementing the NFL Rookie Success program perfectly.
The Rookie Success Program is a league-wide initiative designed to help both drafted and undrafted rookie players adjust to professional football.
Covering everything from financial literacy to injury prevention, the program equips rookies with tools beyond the field. Every team in the NFL tailors the plan to its own style and according to Corum, the Los Angeles Rams’ does that incredibly well. “So basically we meet once a week and we go over different things. They bring different speakers in and we learn a lot like financial literacy. And then we do a lot of community service,” explained Corum. Rams’ indeed has a strong record when it comes to the Rookie Program. Back in 2020, amidst the pandemic, the team adapted its program to a virtual format immediately, underscoring its commitment to rookie support.

The organization also pairs its rookies with experienced players and staff, fostering a supportive environment. “I think our rookie class really is a true brotherhood and a lot of great guys, genuine dudes, that love the game of football and just love to have a good time,” stated Blake Corum. This camaraderie has steadied him as he redefines his place, proving that a mentorship-driven culture can bridge the gap between college stardom and NFL reality.
Still, Corum doesn’t attribute the team’s—or the rookies’—success entirely to the program. He points to the team’s unique recruitment approach as another key factor, emphasizing how their scouting and selection process sets the foundation for everything that follows.
Building Success Through Culture: The Rams’ Character-First Recruitment Strategy
Corum highlights that Los Angeles’ distinctive culture stems not only from their on-field strategy, rather it starts with the team’s recruitment policy. “Coach McVey does a phenomenal job at making sure it’s a brotherhood but also the way they recruit at the combine is a lot different than other teams,” he stated.

The 24-year-old believes that the personalization touch during the recruitment process has helped the team a lot. The Los Angeles approach prioritizes character over pure athleticism, a strategy that pays dividends in team chemistry. “When they bring these guys in is when you meet a good person and we just hit it off but we had a great rookie class,” Corum noted, pointing to how quickly he bonded with his team over shared values.
This tailored recruitment style shines through in examples like the signing of Davante Adams. While Adams was in Japan, coach McVay stayed in close contact. He even sent videos explaining the wide receiver’s potential role in the team. By emphasizing cultural fit, the team builds a unit where collaboration thrives. Investing in synergy over raw skills and talent fosters stronger and more adaptable teams, a principle applicable far beyond sports.
