Fernando Torres has enjoyed an excellent season after returning to his boyhood club Atletico Madrid. The Spanish striker, who is 31 now, netted against Real Madrid and Barcelona. He also scored a fantastic goal, embarrassing two Villarreal defenders, which was the winner of La Liga goal of the season.
The striker, often referred to as ‘El Nino’ which means kid (he became a star for Atletico at a very young age), will be happier now, because recently re-acquired his No.9 jersey at Atletico, which he used to wear before he moved to Liverpool. Mario Mandzukic wore the jersey in the 2014-15 season, and after his departure to Juventus, Torres dons the No. 9 again.
Understandably, Torres was very pleased with this and even posted a tweet about it expressing his happiness. Then, his teammate Antoine Griezmann decided to engage in friendly banter, by tweeting the Spanish equivalent of “Aren’t you going to save that number for me?” to Torres. Torres joined in and tweeted, “You are having a great time with the No. 7 jersey so you can keep that”. It is nice to see the teammates engage in friendly banter, and Atletico will be hoping that the strikers have the same chemistry on the field next season if they are paired together upfront. They have made some shrewd signings and will be hoping to challenge for their 2nd La Liga title in 3 years.
