On 8 June 1945, Derek Underwood, probably England’s greatest ever spinner was born. He was a spinner by name if not nature as many of the books still classify him as a left-arm medium bowler. He had an outstanding record in English victories, boasting of 127 wickets at an average of 15. His best came against Australia where he took 7 for 50 at Oval in 1968 to seal a memorable win for the English men.

8 June, 1932 saw the birth of an English skipper, Ray Illingworth who would become the only English captain to regain the Ashes in Australia after Douglas Jardine.  As an off-spinning all-rounder, he was cussed and miserly. Throughout his career he went for less than two runs per over. He took over as the coach of the national side in 1964 but was not quite as successful.
