With fan hopes increased since the Spanish GP, many expected Mercedes drivers to perform on this track. However, Hamilton could only qualify for P8 after a major collision between front-running rivals caused a hindrance. Moreover, the 37-year-old was sandwiched between old rivals Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel. As expected, the race was not one Hamilton hoped for, as he struggled to get past Alonso. The Spaniard arguably slowed down the whole midfield for quite a while with his pace and defensive skills.
