New reports suggest that Fernando Alonso might ditch Aston Martin for a switch to Mercedes as rumors about the Spaniard having a conversation with Mercedes boss, Toto Wolff surface. This comes right after Lewis Hamilton was confirmed to leave Mercedes at the end of 2024. The seven-time world champion is set to join forces with Charles Leclerc at Ferrari starting from the 2025 season.

If Alonso decides to move to Mercedes, this won’t be the first time he will pull out a move like this. When Sebastian Vettel announced his retirement at the end of 2022, Alonso was immediately signed by Aston Martin, suggesting that the Spaniard was already in conversation with the Silverstone-based team.

According to the Instagram post from ‘Formula God’, “Ted Kravitz reports that Fernando Alonso’s inner circle and Toto Wolff had contact in the last few hours. Alonso is awaiting to see Aston Martin‘s progress in 2024 before deciding anything.”

Coming to Hamilton, there’s no doubt that Hamilton had a historic stint with Mercedes. However, with no immediate improvement in sight for the Brackley-based squad, Hamilton is set to start a new chapter with the iconic Scuderia. He will be hoping to get a chance to fight for his record-breaking 8th world championship in 2025. The same is true for Fernando Alonso, who has been eyeing his 3rd world championship in what is probably his final stint in Formula 1.

However, if that were to happen, the odds are that he would prefer Mercedes over his current team. These are just rumors as of now. Fans will have to wait for an official confirmation.

Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari not only reshapes the driver lineup for the Maranello-based team but also sparks curiosity about the dynamics within the Mercedes camp with Alonso potentially in the mix. When people got to know about Hamilton’s move to Ferrari, they had one question: Would Mercedes replace the star with his former McLaren teammate?

Well, nothing is official yet, but Alonso seems like a good option. Despite being 42 years old, the driver had a great 2023 campaign. He is the kind of guy Mercedes would want to sign after losing Hamilton. Further, Alonso’s Aston Martin contract expires at the end of 2024. So there seems to be a possibility.
