Brad Pitt's F1 project: A cheeky nod to Top Gun or just rubbing salt in Hamilton's wound?

Remember when Lewis Hamilton almost starred in ‘Top Gun: Maverick’? Unfortunately, this massive crossover between F1 and action movies didn’t happen then. And maybe to compensate for his regret, Lewis came up with the idea of ‘F1’. Surprisingly, the upcoming F1 movie is also being directed by Top Gun’s filmmaker Joseph Kosinski. Not all of this can be a coincidence, can it be? Hamilton recalled in a GQ interview about his conversation with the real Maverick, Tom Cruise, “I will even be a janitor. Just let me be in it.”

But sadly, when the Briton did receive a call from the filmmakers, he had to decline the offer. Lewis Hamilton’s conflicting schedule throughout the year, would not have given him a two weeks break to play a pilot in the movie. Although he didn’t get to work with Kosinski before, he will be in the Formula 1 film. Lewis put a lot of emphasis on keeping ‘F1’ as authentic as possible. “My point was: Guys, this movie needs to be so authentic,” Hamilton said, and keeping those words in mind, Kosinski and his team have brought the movie from the studios to the F1 tracks.

F1 personalities, including drivers and team principals, will cameo in the film ‘F1,’ playing themselves to enhance authenticity. Director Joseph Kosinski emphasized, “They’re all playing themselves. We’re embedding into this world, so the drivers are who they are in these races.” Producer Jerry Bruckheimer noted, “These drivers are picked because they’re phenomenal, they have to be amazing for F1, charismatic, and good-looking—they’re like movie stars.”

The filmmakers are aiming to deliver an emotional connection to the audience. Look at ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, with all the flying and a beautiful back story. If there was no emotional connection, the audience would not have made it one of the top-grossing movies of 2022! With ‘F1’ as well, Lewis Hamilton and the filmmakers are planning to bring the emotional touch.

What does Lewis Hamilton’s ‘F1’ starring Brad Pitt aim to offer the audience?

‘F1′ has many surprises, including new technology to capture high-speed racing, as revealed by Joseph Kosinski. Characters Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt) and Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris) have official social media accounts sharing race updates. The story revolves around Sonny Hayes’ comeback to F1, adding an emotional touch reminiscent of real-life comebacks in the sport.

Brad Pitt and Damson Idris had trained in F3 cars for three months, which stunt doubles also practiced under Mercedes’ supervision. Mercedes supported the movie by building F2 cars that resemble F1 cars and providing essential sport-related help and advice. Above all, Lewis Hamilton’s years of experience in the field has been an advantage in the making of ‘F1’. So far, only Guenther Steiner, Max Verstappen, and Carlos Sainz have had proper cameos, but filmmakers hint, that nearly everyone in the sport will appear in the movie.
