There is a lot that goes into making a seven-time Formula 1 world champion. There is the obvious talent behind the wheel and the car to support and showcase talent. However, there is another aspect that Lewis Hamilton, as well as NFL and Bodybuilding GOATs Tom Brady and Arnold Schwarzenegger, have adopted.

The aspect is a plant-based diet. A plant-based diet has become an integral part of a plethora of athletes’ diets in the current scenario. Lewis Hamilton also became a part of the list of athletes in 2018. Not only because of environmental reasons, but the Mercedes man is also on a vegan diet for fitness as well.

In an exclusive with Men’s Health UK, Hamilton revealed the benefits of the diet on his health and performance.

“I have more energy; I’m so much more productive. I wake up feeling way better, clearer in thought, and fresher in my body, I recover quicker, I sleep better. My skin cleared up. I have fewer allergies. There are just so many impacts,” he revealed.

“I’m physically in better shape than I’ve ever been, and I’m more successful than ever right now, and my plant-based programme has played such a big role in that,” Hamilton added.

However, converting to a plant-based diet from a predominately animal-based diet is a difficult transition. Hamilton also suggests “don’t go hard” with the switch and instead transition in.

This is excellent advice, as both Brady and Arnold Schwarzenegger are following this approach.

Unlike Lewis Hamilton, Tom Brady and Arnold Schwarzenegger are taking the 80/20 approach

The 80/20 approach is such that one eats 80% plant-based food and meat for the remaining 20%. This approach makes the diet more sustainable and also fulfills the protein requirements.

For someone like Tom Brady with high protein requirements, the 80/20 approach is necessary. Dietitian Alix Turoff told Insider, “I think we can all agree that adding more plants to our diet is always a good idea, but that doesn’t mean being full plant-based is necessary. Especially for someone like Tom Brady, whose protein needs are going to be very high with his activity level!”

Arnold Schwarzenegger is on the same approach and the benefits are mind-blowing. “My bad cholesterol number is so low that my doctor thought I might be a different person,” Schwarzenegger revealed.
