Sometimes off-track revelations add a layer of depth to what can otherwise seem like a dramatic moment in the fast-moving world of Formula 1. Daniel Ricciardo faced a challenging period at McLaren, culminating in his unexpected departure from the team in 2022. Despite contributing to McLaren‘s triumph at the 2021 Italian Grand Prix, the Honey Badger found himself on the receiving end of a mid-season ousting.
The decision, however, was solely based on performance metrics and not personal agendas. The Aussie’s results failed to align with those of his teammate, Lando Norris, who consistently scored points with the MCL35, even making his way to the podium at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. Recently, McLaren CEO Zak Brown unveiled a surprising sentiment towards Daniel Ricciardo despite the abrupt end to their collaboration. Brown’s candid acknowledgment of a “soft spot” for Ricciardo sheds light on the intricacies and personal connections that define Formula 1 team dynamics.

Despite the unforgiving nature of Formula 1 that often shapes team decisions, Daniel Ricciardo’s reflections on his McLaren tenure offered a glimpse into the psychological resilience required of F1 drivers.
The abrupt end initially stung, but as Ricciardo reflects, “At the time, it was a bit of a harsh reality getting fired, but by the end of the season… It was a blessing in disguise.“ Expressing gratitude for the early contract termination, Ricciardo admitted, “I needed to step away for a bit, to re-find myself, re-find my love for the sport.” His perspective underscores the power of hindsight and the mental fortitude required for the drivers in the cut-throat world of F1 racing.

And now it’s safe to say that McLaren CEO, Zak Brown doesn’t have any bitter feelings for the Honey Badger either. In a recent podcast conversation, Brown expressed a “soft spot” for the Australian driver while reflecting on what his new Aussie driver brings to the team, stating, “Lando hadn’t been challenged by his teammate in the last couple of years on a regular basis. And, you know, on a side note, great to see Daniel doing so well at Alpha Tauri because he’s a great guy and won me my first race. Always had a soft spot for him, yeah.“
As one chapter closes, another potential storyline unfolds for Daniel Ricciardo, who finds himself in a fortuitous position at Alpha Tauri following Nyck de Vries’ mid-season departure.
Daniel Ricciardo opens up about his dream return to Red Bull
The unexpected opportunity to get back into F1 mid-season in 2023 reignited the Aussie’s dream of returning to the illustrious Red Bull Racing, a team where he found immediate success in his debut season in 2014.
Reflecting on his initial Red Bull experience, where he secured three victories and a third-place finish in the drivers’ championship, Daniel Ricciardo expressed his aspirations of concluding his F1 career as a Red Bull driver. “I’m not even going to put a day, or date on it, or year, whatever,” Ricciardo said in F1 Beyond The Grid Podcast. “I think coming back into it and jumping back in with the Red Bull family, doing the test in July, all these things, working with Simon again, that’s really the dream.“
