Who in the future could replace Sergio Perez at Red Bull? The audience will have a myriad of answers. Some would say Liam Lawson, while others would prefer Daniel Ricciardo. Some might even go to the extent of suggesting the F2 driver Isack Hadjar. However, we’re blatantly missing out on one name. Any guesses? It’s Yuki Tsunoda, and it has been surprising how the Japanese driver is being left out of the Red Bull promotion conversation.
Tsunoda has been consistent with his performance this year. He’s currently running VCARB‘s show in F1. More importantly, the 24-year-old has constantly out-qualified the veteran Daniel Ricciardo. Despite his impressive execution, Christian Horner isn’t paying much attention. Now, a big opportunity has presented itself before Yuki- a chance to get a seat at Aston Martin in 2026. Should he grab it?

The 1996 F1 World Champion, Damon Hill strongly believes and suggests the VCARB driver to knock at Aston Martin’s door. In a recent episode of the F1 Nation Podcast on Spotify, Hill shared his opinion and astonishment on the entire Yuki Tsunoda situation. What has Tsunoda got to do to get the credibility that he thinks he deserves? He’s been consistent this year and quick. However, he’s never been part of the conversation.
During the podcast exchange, Damon Hill said: “If I were him, I’d be on the phone with Aston Martin now. ‘Cause he’s Japanese and they’ve got Honda. And he’s coming because you think he just will never get the credibility he deserves within Red Bull.” The Milton Keynes-based team seems to be prioritizing experience. Moreover, they simply wouldn’t like to test Max Verstappen’s nerves with a more competitive driver in the second seat. And knowing how aggressive Tsunoda can be (excluding his radio messages), Red Bull could face a tough spot.
Hill continued, “He’s [Tsunoda’s] right in saying that, ‘I can’t understand. It doesn’t make any sense.’ But you know, when you see pictures of Max leaving the circuit in the helicopter with Danny Ricciardo and they’re all smiles, you get the feeling that Danny Ric and Max”, adding: “Max would be quite happy with Danny Ric as a teammate. So if his power is such in that team that he can almost influence that decision then I do think the pressure is on to get Danny in there.”
Red Bull has already given Daniel Ricciardo a second lease of life by encouraging him, and his performances have been getting stronger. Damon Hill’s discussion throws light on how important Max Verstappen is at Red Bull. So much so that he could sway the decision pointer from Yuki Tsunoda (if he’s considered) to Daniel Ricciardo. Moreover, since Verstappen and Danny share a good note, the former would prefer the ‘Honey Badger’.

What’s your perspective on:
Is Yuki Tsunoda better off at Aston Martin, or should he fight for his place at Red Bull?

How influential is Max Verstappen at Red Bull?
Max Verstappen is Red Bull’s key asset. Since his debut, he’s consistently delivered impressive results, making him crucial to the team. Red Bull designs their cars around him, and as long as they provide a competitive machine, the ‘Flying Dutchman’ is likely to stay with them. Moreover, he also influences the choice of his teammates. Given his competitive edge, Red Bull seeks a less challenging partner for him. Sergio Perez has been that teammate, but with his recent drop in performance, his future is uncertain.
When the time comes, Verstappen might sway Christian Horner and Helmut Marko to bring in Daniel Ricciardo over Liam Lawson or Yuki Tsunoda. So, you see, Max is currently an important asset for the energy drinks brand. At the same time, the question lies: Should they give chances to new drivers like Lawson and Tsunoda? This is debatable, and according to Damon Hill, Yuki should watch out for an Aston Martin seat. Especially with Honda moving in with the team, which will give the driver the added advantage of having the support and sponsorship of the Japanese engine manufacturer.
