When you talk about the top drivers in the current F1 grid, most people choose Lewis Hamilton or Max Verstappen. Former world champions, like Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso, are often forgotten. However, there is one person who still holds the Spaniard in high regard, and it is none other than the 1996 world champion, Damon Hill.

Hill wishes to have the older Fernando Alonso as his F1 teammate

Speaking on the F1 Nation podcast, Hill explained who he would like to choose as his F1 teammate.

“I have to say Fernando Alonso has gotta be right up there, on my list of chosen teammates as the moment.

“Of course, Esteban Ocon was singing his praises after the Hungarian Grand Prix, and saying what a great lad he was to work with. I would think that when he was very much younger, and extremely quick and competitive, he may have been a little more difficult to work with.

“But we all live and learn and grow up and stuff. So the mature Fernando Alonso would have to be right up there on the list,” Hill concluded.

Speaking to Peter Reichert with RTL, he said, “He’s a great driver, maybe the best of all time. The way he fights, at 40, after winning two titles, is unbelievable. I learn a lot next to him, that pushes the team forward.

“I enjoy working with him. I think we’re a great duo. There are no games, no selfishness, no lies or all the things I’ve heard. He’s a huge racer. Period,” Ocon concluded. (Translated via Google Translate)
