Most people will tell you getting to the top is extremely difficult. However, only a few will tell you how difficult it is to stay at the top. One such person in the world of Formula 1 is Mick Schumacher. The German suffered the most unwanted fate for a driver in the premier class. However, many have joined the Mercedes team as reserve drivers and come out shining. This is exactly how the young Schumacher is expecting his journey to shape up as well.

Schumacher was shown the door by Haas at the end of the 2022 season. Soon after, Mercedes announced him as a reserve driver for the team for the 2023 season. It may seem like a demotivating demotion for many, but not for Mick Schumacher. The German, speaking to the media at the curtain raiser of the W14, revealed how he feels about his new role.

He said, “Well, there’s obviously no guarantee [that I return to the grid in 2024], but I’m in a comfortable position where I feel I can learn, [and] I can extract the maximum from this year even though I’m not driving.”

However, he is confident about his chances of securing a seat in 2024. On that, he said, “But with the results I’ve shown in the junior categories, but also in F1, I’m sure there will be opportunities. Over the winter a few people have already mentioned that there is interest, so in that sense, I’m not too worried.”

It’s not just the young Schumacher loving his new Mercedes look ,the fans are in agreement. However, the 2024 season is far away from now. This is why confident, but not too comfortable is the approach Schumacher will take for the upcoming season.

The German is definitely in an undesirable situation by staying away from racing. However, Schumacher is approaching the 2023 season as if he will be racing every opportunity he gets to keep himself vigilant.

He revealed, “[I’ll] still probably take a very similar approach,” he said. “I will be going into the weekend thinking as if I was going to race, to keep myself sharp.”

It won’t be easy, but the promising young driver is prepared to embrace this reserve role at Mercedes. Moreover, being in one of the most successful teams on the grid is an exciting learning opportunity. This is exactly how Schumacher sees it as well.

It will be interesting to see if Schumacher gets the opportunity to take to the track in the W14 on a weekend. If and when he gets that opportunity, he will need to make the most of it to silence his doubters.
