Max Verstappen is arguably in the form of his life. The Dutchman peaked in 2021 and is carrying his impressive form to the 2022 season. The odds of a second championship are also firmly on his side. But have you ever wondered about the reigning champion’s pre-race routine?


Before getting behind the wheel, every driver will look to relax and reduce the pressure. And the Dutchman revealed that during night races, he usually enjoys playing video games in the morning to calm his nerves ahead of the race.

On being asked about his routine and interests in video games, he said,”I mean not 1 hour before the race. But, if like the race is night race or whatever and I need to leave the hotel in the afternoon, I’d wake up of course a bit earlier and sometimes I squeeze in a few games, yeah.”

F1 drivers also spend excessive time on simulators to fine-tune their knowledge about a track. Speaking on the difference between a simulator and a video game, he added, “I mean, we have a whole setup back in Milton-Keynes, which is pretty incredible. You know we set up the car before actually get to racetrack itself so we do spend a lot of time on that yeah. So, I wouldn’t call that a video game.”

For me like the video game especially on my laptop. I just enjoy talking to my friends having a bit of fun, you know, because it’s also a nice way of just relaxing outside of racing.”

At the age of 24, Verstappen has already broken several records in Formula 1. He is the youngest driver to win 25 races and is the first Dutch driver to win an F1 world championship. And he opened up on the secret behind all these achievements.

The interviewer asked Verstappen, “Basically, I was asking if I’m good at the video game, do you think I could do your job?” to which he jokingly replied, “Yeah, you’ll be a world champion.“
