Monza saw George Russell take the podium in a third-place finish. Meanwhile, McLaren’s Daniel Ricciardo was out of the race six laps before the finish. The Aussie driver’s engine switched off and there was nothing he could do except wait for the safety car.

Despite that, the post-race interviews saw the two drivers exchanging words with humor. Russell was giving his interview when Ricciardo bumped into him, and the banter ensued.

Calm down! This guy . . . is always getting in the way. These Aussies, eh?” Russell teased, “Things are strange down under . . . no offense . . .

None taken, Russell.” said the Aussie, tapping Russell on the back cordially.

Soon after, the talk turned to the race, and what a strange weekend it had been. Daniel commented that he and Russell hadn’t had a podium win yet. And that set off another round of camaraderie.

No, we need one, we definitely need one (podium) . . . I wouldn’t be doing a shoey though,” responded Russell, referring to Ricciardo’s infamous tradition of drinking champagne from the shoe at the podium.

You would,” Ricciardo said confidently.

I wouldn’t.” said the determined Brit.

You’d get booed if you wouldn’t,” said Ricciardo, mock-threateningly.

Alright, then I will. I’m easily convinced . . . There we go, race recap done!” Russell laughed, ending the interview.

While many consider the tradition of “a shoey” disgusting, for these two it is now a mark of their unique off-the-track bond.

And this is moments after Daniel Ricciardo not just lost, but did not get to finish the race. Whereas Russell won a podium finish on the same track. If that isn’t the definition of a great friendship, we don’t know what is.

Daniel Ricciardo and George Russell are friendship goals

Quite recently, Russell showed up on the Dutch GP wearing a Ricciardo shirt. Upon asking about it, Ricciardo shared the amusing anecdote of Russell one day sending a picture of his girlfriend eyeing the RIC3 store. Ricciardo had then sent Russell’s girlfriend some things from the shop.

And I guess one of them actually fits George. So he decided to wear it today. So it’s good. George is a good lad. Yeah, I like the kid!said Ricciardo.
