A lot has changed since Sebastian Vettel made his full-time debut in the traveling circus in 2007 for BMW Sauber. A name that is synonymous with racing folklore will soon leave the grid for good. However, before Vettel retires, let’s revisit one of his cheekiest remarks to date.

The year is 2008 and Vettel is yet to begin one of the greatest championship-winning streaks in the sport’s history. The young German went into the 2008 season as a Toro Rosso driver. Vettel was showing signs of promise but had not finished a race higher than P4 in his first 21 races.

However, when Vettel recorded his first podium finish, he did it by reserving the top step of the podium. The German won the first race of his career at the 2008 Italian GP. The win in Monza was a record as Vettel became the youngest race winner in the sport’s history aged 21 years 73 days.

After the race, however, the then-Toro Rosso man gave the world of F1 a glimpse into his humor. When asked if winning the race was the greatest moment of his life, Vettel had the cheekiest of replies. He said, “You obviously weren’t there when I lost my virginity.”

Vettel quickly put his first ahead of a first race win in the candid reply. Safe to say, the German has matured ten folds over the years. The German now uses his platform mostly to talk about causes he cares about.

However, we still won’t put a cheeky reply or two past him before he leaves the circus.

There’s a reason Vettel is still the youngest world champion in the sport’s history: he always had what it takes. In an interview from 2010 when Vettel was 22, his comments before winning his first championship reveal his level of maturity.

He said, “I’m only 22 but I already learn that there are no guarantees in life. We have one of the best cars, which is something we can be proud of, but still we have to work hard.”
