The never-ending debate of Formula 1’s GOAT always gets varied opinions from different entities. Many are of the belief no driver can surpass the incredible achievements of Lewis Hamilton. However, there are some who believe only the drivers of the previous generation, like Michael Schumacher and Alain Prost, can be considered the GOAT. Former Swedish driver Marc Surer expressed his opinion on this debate with an interesting example.
The Swedish former racing driver turned commentator believes only the likes of Michael Schumacher and Alain Prost can be considered GOATs. Why? because Surer believes the technological advancements and the current nature of racing have made life in the premier class easier.

He also argued in the interview on the Formel1.de YouTube channel, Schumacher had a greater impact on his teams Ferrari and Benetton compared to Hamilton. “Lewis dominated in a really impressive way,” he said without taking away Hamilton’s contribution. However, he added, “Before that, Michael Schumacher was so impressive. And before that there was also Alain Prost. He was world champion four times. He argued, Hamilton was “always in the right car.” Whereas, “But to see him as the best of all time because of that? No – even if he has more titles. That also has to do with it, because the risk is less today. Both drivers have seven world championship titles. However, Hamilton never wants to take the crown of GOAT of F1, some people believe. However, this debate might always hang in the balance if Hamilton can’t clinch his eighth title.
Marc Surer believes Lewis Hamilton will throw in the towel if he cannot fight for the title
Hamilton has been chasing the elusive eighth but without any luck. His efforts took a massive hit during the 2022 season. However, the Brit will begin his hunt again in 2023. Although if Mercedes can’t give him a competitive enough car, Hamilton might just throw in the towel according to Surer.

“We don’t know what’s going on in his head. It’s possible that he’ll throw in the towel at some point if he doesn’t see the chance,” speculates Surer.
