It was an emotional moment for Serena Williams when she bid goodbye to the World of Tennis. In a bid to grow and nurture the family that she had started with her husband, Alexis Ohanian, she took the decision of “evolving away from tennis”. And one of her closest friends from the F1 universe, Lewis Hamilton has taken her story as an inspiration to shine light on the important role that his father played in his life.
Ahead of the Hungarian GP, a reporter asked Hamilton how important it is for him to inspire the “young guys”. In response, Hamilton not only spoke about his intentions when it comes to inspiring the coming generations but also brought up the life of the Williams sisters and how they take care of their family. And as he poured his thoughts, he even shined a light on the role that his father, Anthony Hamilton had to play in his life.
Hamilton said, “It’s more an all-around story. Well, it’s explaining the story because I’ve not done a documentary before If you look at like the Williams sisters, if you watch their movie, it’s incredibly inspiring to see what a family can do when they put focus, passion, and commitment into something. If the kids are nurtured in the right way and giving a path and the direction to go in what is possible.”

He elaborated on his father’s struggles in his growing years. Hamilton said, “I think every parent wants the best for that kid. There are some that are separated and like fathers, who don’t know what to do with their kid. And that’s just how it was for my dad.”
Such is the love that the father-son duo share that Hamilton even sports the number 44 in F1 as an ode to his father.

In the F1 paddock, 44 is synonymous with the 7-time champion. And the story of that number goes back to Hamilton’s early Karting days. For his first-ever Karting race, the Briton was asked to pick a number that would represent him. And the only thing he had in mind was his father’s number plate which was F44.
And he’s held onto that number throughout his life. He’s seen highs and lows in his F1 career but his father has been there for him even when he was not there with him. It would be befitting if F1 retires 44 when Hamilton retires from the sport, as a token of respect for the man who has contributed so much to the sport, on and off the racetrack.

It is so amazing to see the kind of impact that familial support can have on the lives of elite athletes. If such strong pillars of support like Richard Williams and Anthony Hamilton were present in everybody’s lives, the world would be a beautifully different place.
