Maria Sharapova has become almost an F1 insider ever since she attended the Miami Grand Prix. While we didn’t expect her to be back so so soon, she arrived in the Principality and this time as a special guest of the FIA. Dressed in neon yellow, she presented the pole position award to F1’s reigning champion Max Verstappen. Though the Pirelli Award presentation caught our attention, a few drew long-drawn controversial similarities involving her past and that of the champion.

In 2021, Lewis Hamilton and Verstappen entered the Yas Marina Circuit in championship hopes tied to the decimal point. But the last lap drama involving a controversial call by Michael Masi catapulted Max Verstappen to win the race and the championship. The much controversial call was reviewed and called a “Human Error”. Bastien Fachan posted a picture from Saturday’s pole position award ceremony, and wrote, “Someone who needed external help to win a major title, and Maria Sharapova” Fans immediately caught on to what the Tennis author was implying.

Though she retired 3 years ago, the woman is still a massive attraction in the world of sports and even outside. Her glorious legacy was, however, tainted when she was handed a 15-month-long suspension as she failed a drug test. Though this is a story of the past, her rendezvous with a controversial F1 star has reminded the world of her “innocent mistake” and this is exactly what the fans remembered.

And though she claimed she was unaware of the implications, she took full responsibility for using the anti-ischemic drug and was deferred to participate in the Rio Olympics. And though the Tennis writer targeted Verstappen, the fans drew comparisons.
