George Russell enjoyed a fine start to his Mercedes tenure. He consistently produced top-5 finishes in the first half of the season, which has helped him to stay above Lewis Hamilton in the driver’s championship. Moreover, the former Williams driver has bonded pretty well with his Mercedes teammate.

After a dismal campaign all season long, Mercedes did not expect the season to be a disaster. However, despite their underperforming car, their drivers have managed to salvage some pride for them. George has been scrutinized at times for taking people out of the race. For instance, he took out pole-sitter Carlos Sainz in the last race in Austin. While a lot of eyebrows have been raised concerning his strategy, Russell said he’d have done the same in Mexico, had it not been for his teammate on the outside.

He further added, “It’s probably the furthest we’ve been away from the midfield and the closest we’ve been to the front for quite a while so a good step forward this weekend”.

George Russell will be hoping to get his groove back as Mercedes enters a critical stage of the season. They are not fighting for any title this time out. However, they will be hoping to get a win for the team who have endured a lot this season.
