David Coulthard, analyzing Fernando Alonso‘s masterclass at 41, said, “He’s angry that he’s only won two world championships, and that anger is what drives him..” But why is it that the man who has outperformed his car 100% of times just has 2 championships whereas his ex-McLaren teammate Lewis Hamilton has a whooping seven? An ex-F1 team boss answers that.

Fernando Alonso has a brain so sharp that he can roll out a detailed instructions manual while racing at 200 miles per hour. But how, and more importantly, why did that brain make poor decisions? The answer to that is career choices and time wasted on teams that could never really utilize the Spanish Samurai’s full potential. To put things in perspective, he has been a part of McLaren twice and Renault-Alpine three times. Nando jumped ships from Ferrari to a massively struggling McLaren in 2015 when the latter offered him 37 million UDS worth of the deal. And Eddie Jordan, who is a $600 million worth man himself, has now targeted him for making such decisions.

In the Formula for Success podcast, Jordan very bluntly stated, “He has to ask himself and he has to ask Flavio – his manager Flavio Briatore and I still are good friends – but you have to remember, Fernando Alonso chased the money. He went to teams where he was getting more money than what he would have got in another team, which probably has a better chance to win the world title.”

He said, “Everyone who follows F1 knows that Fernando is a driver who has a set of skills that none of the other drivers have. In my opinion, he doesn’t need a strategist or anything like that. He can manage his career from inside the car. He is extremely good at that and he also has a lot of driving talent. That is where Alonso is so strong,” said the Haas boss.
