One driver alone can propel an entire nation toward a sport. This is an extremely common occurrence in the world of Formula 1. Some drivers leave such legacies that it not only unites a nation to support their very best but also inspires the next generation of drivers. Lewis Hamilton is definitely leaving such a legacy for all Britishers out there. Although, who will pick up the baton after the seven-time world champion eventually retires? Well, Hamilton has backed Lando Norris to do so.
In an interview after the Austrian GP, after overtaking Hamilton with his new and improved MCL60, Norris made a confession about becoming the “top Brit” in the sport. His desire has got the backing of the “top Brit” himself ahead of the British GP. Hamilton confided with the media to reveal who he believes will keep the British flag flying high for years to come.
According to Sky Sports, Hamilton said, “It’s not passing the baton, but knowing we have other great British drivers will prolong the success of the Brits moving forwards. Our fan base will always have good drivers [to cheer for] because we generally develop good drivers in the UK,” said Hamilton.”

“George [Russell] and Lando [Norris] are both incredibly talented and have such a bright future ahead of them. It’s crazy to think they are as young as they are. Lando is 23 but has been here for ages. I’m excited to watch their journey and where they get to.”
Both Norris and Hamilton’s Mercedes teammate were rivals in F2 before making the transition to F1. They both have been tipped to keep the British flag flying high in the sport and Hamilton also believes. In fact, there are some who believe Russell is already proving his caliber at Mercedes and against Hamilton.

The young Mercedes Brit started showcasing his talents from day 1 for the Brackley outfit. Russell’s incredible first season for the team made the entire world of F1 appreciate his racing prowess, especially after he trumped world champion teammate in the championship battle. After the first season, now a lot of F1 entities are recognizing Russell’s talents and believe in time, he will take the No. 1 spot at Mercedes.
Pedro de la Rosa among them said, “But more importantly than outqualifying him I think that he’s…some races he’s even faster [in] race pace, you know. I mean they are very evenly matched and that is the beauty of these two drivers. Especially about George [Russell]. Because I think no one, no one ever expected him to be this strong, this mature.”

Hamilton has had a better start to the season. However, as time passes, most believe Russell will pass Hamilton as well in all aspects of the sport. Do you agree with this bold assessment?
