Mick Schumacher may not want to say “Danke!” to Haas, after hearing that he shall be replaced for 2023. With all signs pointing towards a return for fellow German senior Nico Hulkenberg, Mick is surely looking for a seat to stay on in F1. The doors are closing on him, yet he may find a lifeline from the Williams team.

The 2020 F2 champion may end up on Williams’ shortlisted drivers. Provided Logan Sargeant (who has been confirmed a drive in 2023 for Williams) fails to secure the Super License points by the end of the F2 season in Abu Dhabi. Williams CEO Jost Capito has said that they will explore every driver who has a Super License and experience.

As per Motorsport-Magazin, Capito said, “If it doesn’t work out with the SuperLicense [for Sargeant], everyone who has experience and a SuperLicense is an option.”

When asked about why they haven’t considered Mick Schumacher earlier, Capito replied, “We have dealt with all those who come into question. But it hasn’t yet been decided whether Mick will stay at Haas or not. It would not have been possible to do that yet.”

Williams may want to play the waiting game despite confirming Sargeant provisionally for 2023. Schumacher has had a roller coaster of a season with Haas. And his quest to secure a 2023 drive has been similar.

First, a possible pink slip from Haas then rumored for Alpine, and now Williams. His F1 career surely hangs on this slim hope from Williams for now.

Is Williams in two minds over Mick Schumacher and Logan Sargeant?

When Capito was asked about why they announced Sargeant (provisionally) Capito replied, “If you compare his qualifying results in particular with those of his teammates, he was always better in qualifying – even against a Piastri. That shows that his speed is there.”

“He has to learn. He made the breakthrough, he was really good as a rookie in Formula 2, won races, and was always good in qualifying.”

There is a huge push for getting an American driver in F1 right now. And F2 rookie Logan Sargeant has been the prime candidate so far. He needs to complete 40 points for a Super License still. Provided he finishes 7th or above in the Abu Dhabi finale and also gains points from Free Practice running with Williams, he will get his Super License.

However, Williams may also want to be ready with a contingency plan. Formula 2 is a chaotic series and Sargeant could easily fail to secure the requisite finish for securing his Super License. That’s where Mick Schumacher comes into the picture.
