Mercedes has never been as down in the trenches as they were in 2022. If it wasn’t for the incessant complaints from Lewis Hamilton, the team might’ve still been struggling with its zeropod concept. Mercedes has made considerable progress since then but they are nowhere near back to being their old self again. In fact, many believe Hamilton and Mercedes have never suffered such an abysmal stretch of form in the sport’s history. This is exactly why the Brit had to take matters into his own hands and give everyone a reminder of how life in F1 works.

The fact is Mercedes has won one race so far after winning back-to-back eighth constructor titles. So to highlight the topsy tuvery nature of F1 the Brit used his former team, McLaren, for this quick reminder. He pointed out, as tweeted by RaceFans, how even during his McLaren days, especially toward the end, he did not have a competitive enough car and went through season after season without challenging for a championship to defend Mercedes’s current state.

“People forget that and just seem to remember the seven years or eight years that we were competitive,” he said in an interview with RaceFans. “They forget the years before that where I had pretty interesting cars at McLaren. So I’ve had years like last year and this year. Of course, when you’re faced with adversity, when you’re faced with a challenge like we have, collectively as a team, you learn more than you do than when it’s smooth sailing at the front.”

Even though there isn’t complete clarity on W14, the Brit made many sacrifices during the 2022 season to help the team understand the car better. This is exactly how he managed to give valuable feedback to the team which brought them a little up to speed. Hamilton’s contribution has been invaluable, revealed the technical director of Mercedes, James Allison.

“Hamilton pointed out key observations he’s made behind the scenes at Mercedes, mentioning recalled Technical Director James Allison by name and claiming the team is now ‘engaging better than ever before about where we are, the mistakes we made, why we’ve made those decisions, and why we won’t make them again.’” revealed a video by The Race.

We are not sure if the Brackley outfit will challenge for the championship again in the next couple of seasons before the regulatory changes but there is certainly a will to.
