With cost cap regulations coming into effect from the 2021 season, the FIA has been very adamant about any breaches. And it seems like Williams has been punished by the Cost Cap committee of the FIA. Failing to disclose its full-year reporting documentation for the 2021 season; the Grove outfit has been asked to pay a monetary fine. There are strict controls on the introduced cost cap and the FIA has been holding teams accountable.

What rule did Williams violate and how much did they pay?

Williams was found to have been in breach of Article 6.28 of the FIA Formula 1 Financial Regulations. According to the document; on 19th May 2022, the FIA and Williams team had entered into an Accepted Breach of Agreement (“ABA”). By the 15th of April, 2022, Williams responded that it had committed a “Procedural Breach” and had taken steps to prevent such a breach.

The statement read, “Having considered Williams’ explanation and given in particular that the Procedural Breach was voluntarily disclosed by Williams in advance of the Full Year Reporting Deadline of 31 March 2022 and Williams has been fully cooperative in seeking to remedy the breach, the Cost Cap Administration deemed it appropriate to offer Williams an ABA resolving the breach on the terms set out below. That offer was accepted by Williams.”

This marks the first instance that a team has been fined for an issue relating to the cost cap. With inflation influencing the costs, many teams have been holding discussions to raise the cost cap. We could very well see many other teams also guilty of such violations as the 2022 season drags on.

“Interestingly for us at Williams, we have new ownership with Dorilton, and not a lot of people understand what Dorilton do but they’re essentially a New York-based private equity house that have a portfolio of companies.”

This according to James is important as Dorilton also has a Venture Capital firm that can connect between the early-stage founders and Formula 1. He also explained that Dorilton Ventures is investing in these companies against the established big tech companies. Hence giving the companies to integrate into the F1 team and appeal to the masses.
