Formula One is said to have a massive change in 2026, thus creating an opportunity for new teams to enter the sport. A prime example of this is the Volkswagen group, which seems to be interested in F1 and will look to enter the grid with Audi or Porsche. Jost Capito who was the Sporting Director of the company, and now the CEO of Williams thinks the German group won’t waste their time if they weren’t interested in the project.

the new regulations which are set to come in 2026, open the doorways for more teams to join the grid. The Volkswagen group is said to be interested in joining the pinnacle of motorsport and will partner with either Audi or Porsche.

As reported by Autosport, Capito said, “I believe it very much depends on the regulations, and the engine regulations for ’26 are not yet out. I think it all depends on that.”
“If they have been serious – they have been part of the engine regulation discussions, and I don’t think they waste their time in going to these meetings, especially also the CEO coming to those meetings, and not being serious. But finally, it depends on what the final regulations are if then the Volkswagen Group thinks it makes sense, they might go to the board and ask for a decision,” the Williams boss concluded.

Who could supply Volkswagen with engines if they enter the grid?
Currently, Mercedes & Ferrari provide power units to most teams on the grid. But, Red Bull will be working on their own powertrains once Honda leaves the sport of Formula One at the end of the current season.
Hence, it is speculated that the Milton-Keynes-based squad could supply the Volkswagen group if they decided to join the grid. However, the 2026 season is still far away, with new regulations coming in next year, every team on the grid will ensure to maximize their utilities to come out on top in 2022.
