Will This Baku F1 ‘Curse’ Further Rupture Lewis Hamilton’s Race-Winning Hopes?

Lewis Hamilton is yet to extend his race wins in every season streak with none in the current season. Hamilton has kept up this record for the last 15 years now with as little as one win in 2013.

However, this record might be under threat now, because of Mercedes’s underwhelming 2022 challenger. The Brackley-based team is yet to eradicate their bouncing issues with the car. Barcelona showed signs of progress, but they were back to square one in Monaco. And now the team will test the W13 on the streets of Baku with the upcoming Azerbaijan GP.

And even if Mercedes eliminates the porpoising in the W13, this still does not guarantee a win for Hamilton. The Silver Arrows are still a long way away from the pace of Ferrari and Red Bull. And assuming Mercedes gets on top of their problems, there is still one obstacle between Hamilton and his win.

First used in 2016 for the ‘Europe GP’ and until 2021, Azerbaijan GP is yet to see a driver win the race twice. And Hamilton has already used up his one-race win card on the streets of Baku back in 2018. However, it’s a fairly new track with only five races hosted so far starting from 2016. But the fact remains that no driver has won the Azerbaijan Grand Prix more than once, so far!

This could mean Hamilton having to wait for another race to get his first win of the season. But records are meant to be broken and Lewis Hamilton, if not anything, is a record-breaker. Although, the seven-time world champion will need a car fit enough to do so. And so far the Mercedes W13 has not been up to the task.

Hamilton hoping for a competitive car in time for Silverstone

Frustrated with their 2022 car, the entire Mercedes camp is yearning for a competitive car. Hamilton has seen the worst of it, with George Russell still extracting the most out of W13’s potential.

And communicating his desire for a competitive car, Hamilton said, “I hope by the time we get to the British Grand Prix at Silverstone we will have the car as we want it – to be able to fight with Ferrari and Red Bull.”
