Will Lewis Hamilton Miss the Canadian GP Over Back Pain Caused by Mercedes F1 Difficulties?

Lewis Hamilton struggled physically in the Azerbaijan GP because of the porpoising issue. Despite finishing fourth and securing the driver of the day, the Briton was in pain and walked in a gingerly fashion after the race. As a result, there were doubts about his availability during this week’s Canadian GP.

However, F1 commentator Martin Brundle believes that the Mercedes driver will be fit to take part in the race. He also sympathized with Hamilton and questioned Mercedes about how the team will resolve the issue.

Speaking with Sky Sports, he said, “I would think he would be okay. The seats are really good in cars now. I can remember sitting on the ground to get the centre of gravity as low as possible, that’s why they sit so low down in the cockpit.”

So when the chassis hits the ground as the Mercedes is then you do take some of that shock loading through your spine there is no doubt about it. I think they are as good as they could be, and I would be surprised if Lewis missed a Grand Prix because of that. I can see how uncomfortable that particular car is and you wonder how they focus on the breaking point.”

After the Grand Prix, Hamilton revealed his difficulties in driving the W-13 in the long straights of Baku. Although they secured a solid result, the Silver Arrows’ problem is persistent. They could, however, minimize the bouncing effect by increasing the car’s height. But this could hamper their performance.

Lewis Hamilton opens up on his availability for the Canadian GP

On Monday, after a torrid evening in Baku, Hamilton himself revealed that he will be available for the Canadian GP. The Brit posted on his social media that his physio Angela Cullen helped him with the treatment.

He wrote, “I’ve had acupuncture and physio with Ang [physio Angela Cullen] and am on the way to my team to work with them on improving. We have to keep fighting. No time like the present to pull together and we will. I’ll be there this weekend, wouldn’t miss it for the world.”

The porpoising issue has been a common theme for most of the cars this year. Drivers, including George Russell and Pierre Gasly, have also voiced their opinion on the safety hazards of the bouncing effect.

Meanwhile, the track in Montreal also has high-speed straights like Baku, so the effect could well continue. While some teams have dealt with this issue, the others like Mercedes are struggling to find a balance between performance and porpoising issues.
