When news broke that Lewis Hamilton had only extended his contract with Mercedes for one year, many speculated that he would either shift to another team or retire from F1 altogether. While no one knows anything about the latter, the Briton’s team boss, Toto Wolff has something to say about the former.

Hamilton joined the Brackley-based squad back in 2013 after leaving McLaren. The decision has been fruitful for both parties, with Mercedes clinching all seven constructors’ title on offer and Lewis clinching six of the last seven drivers’ titles.

In what could be his final year with the Silver Arrows, the Knight may look to set a record by winning an eighth world championship. He will also aim to help Mercedes win another constructors’ championship this year.

Wolff thinks that Lewis Hamilton will be at Mercedes till the end

Given the kind of history and success the two have had together, Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff believes that Mercedes will be Hamilton’s last stop in F1.

He recently said, “I think this will be his last team. There is no better place for him than at Mercedes and our wish is also that he continues with us.

“The symbiosis between us is good and we have celebrated so many successes together that from today’s perspective everything speaks in favour of continuing to race together, ” Wolff concluded.

Hamilton explains why he extended his stay by only a year

The Mercedes driver’s future was up in the air. Since he equaled Schumacher’s record, many thought his goal was achieved and that he was considered to exit the sport on a high. However, just a few weeks before the season began, it was announced that Hamilton would continue with the team, but only for a year.

Lewis told Sky Sports, “Firstly, I’m kind of in a fortunate position where I’ve achieved most of the stuff I wanted to achieve up until this point, so there’s no real need necessarily to plan too far ahead in the future.

“We’re living through an unusual period of time in life and I just wanted one year. Then we can talk about if we do more, and keep adding it [by] one if we have to,” he explained.

The Brit is considered one of the greatest drivers of all time in Formula One. By winning his eighth title this year, he would certainly proven that to anyone who ever doubted him.
