The 2023 F1 season is less than a month away and teams are gearing up enthusiastically. The recent team to reveal their car livery and racing gears is Williams. Many fans had their eyes on this team’s launch, considering they have a new rookie from the USA – Logan Sargeant. For the first time in 8 years, an American driver will take the F1 grid. Logan is also looking quite good in his Williams racing gear besides the car. Although, his helmet design has caught the eye of some people, especially the display of the US Flag on it.
Williams posted pictures of Sargeant with his helmet that shows the American flag on the side of it. Now, this flag is in a flipped position to how it is normally visible from the front. Apparently, there is a reason for the same as per the United States Flag Code.
According to Clause 7 (i) of the US Flag Code, “When displayed either horizontally or vertically against a wall, the union should be uppermost and to the flag’s own right, that is, to the observer’s left. When displayed in a window, the flag should be displayed in the same way, with the union or blue field to the left of the observer in the street.”

This rule is applicable to displaying the American flag on race car liveries and any vehicles. The logic behind the rule is that the flag should be seen as it may be in motion. If the flag is carried in a parade or into battle, the union side with the stars will lead. Thus, Sargeant also abided by the same rule for his helmet design.

When he will race this year, his helmet will show the flag in motion while he is in the car. Therefore, the stars of the union should lead at the front. As per Jalopnik, it is only to “mimic the natural movement” of the flag.
On race car liveries too, if a bigger interpretation of the flag is there, it should follow the same rule. Even if it is a small decal, the union should be in the forward direction and on the observer’s left. So, if Logan is going to have a US Flag decal on his car, it will be according to this rule.
Logan Sargeant has been quite persistent to make it to F1. Being the only American driver, he has got the responsibility to bring F1 glory to his country. Even if he is a slower car at the back, Sargeant can produce some good performances to clinch the odd moment of success.
How does Logan Sargeant feel to represent the USA in F1?
During the Williams launch event, there were a lot of questions for both drivers. Alex Albon welcomed Logan Sargeant as his new teammate. He also cited how it is a great time for him to come to F1. Besides, even Sargeant was grateful that he got his debut with Williams.
Logan further cited how he feels proud to represent his country in F1. Moreover, Sargeant spoke about how there is a lot of scope and time for him to become famous in America. According to RACER, he said, “I think there’s definitely room to grow my brand in America, that’s going to be important going forward.”
“I think having three U.S. grands prix is going to help. Right now maybe I’m not as popular as some of the other drivers that race in America currently, but I’m going to work to change that.” Apparently, Sargeant feels he ain’t that popular yet. But, he has already started enjoying American fame before his first F1 race.
There are people in Florida who recognize Logan instantly. People stop him for autographs and pictures. So, just becoming an F1 driver has put him on the popularity map. Besides, he also has that sense of patriotism to become an American racing icon.

Thus, Sargeant is not going to miss his chances and make his path to F1 success. It has been a while since an American driver scaled the top in the sport. Logan has got the opportunity to change this trend. He certainly has to perform well with Williams first. Though, if he does that, opportunities to grow will chase the man from Florida.
