Monaco tricked us this weekend. Formula 1 has been building up to this race for quite some time now. However, the fans were gearing themselves up for a lonely and dull race. Monaco has been like that in the recent past. But what a race it turned out to be. While late rain added some much-needed drama, the Mercedes duo of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton were putting on a show over the radio waves!

After the race settled in the aftermath of the rain shower, Russell found himself in 5th, with 7x champion, Hamilton planted in 4th. However, Russell was ailing from a 5-second time penalty he had incurred for an unsafe re-entry earlier in the race as a result of a wet excursion. Eager to secure a good points finish, the Brit jumped onto the team radio to ask Hamilton to let him by and protect him from Charles Leclerc who was in 6th. But the team was quick to dismiss this idea.

That being said, Russell showed persistence. Asking once again to be let by. This was to no avail. However, the 25-year-old’s peculiar demands caught the ire of Lewis Hamilton fans all over the internet.

Hamilton and team Mercedes were in no mood to cede position to Russell. However, the very fact that Russell demanded a switch with Hamilton, who had driven supremely well to reach fourth, irked fans of the British multiple-time F1 world champion.

One fan even commented, “Cause where does George think he is???”

Let’s take a look at just a few of the fan reactions from this bizarre radio moment between Russell and his team.

Most of the LH army was upset with Russell’s attitude. The Brit has been outperforming his teammate for well over a season now. However, fans were quick to remind him that he was, at the end of the day, up against a driver like Hamilton and thus needed to respect his own place in the team.

Another detail that attentive fans pointed out was that Russell needed five seconds in hand over Leclerc. And he was comfortably ahead. Then why the need to ask to switch places with Hamilton?
