The controversial zero pod concept on the 2022 Mercedes Challenger turned out to be hugely unsuccessful and was the cause of most of the team’s misery throughout the 2022 season. Mercedes put faith in Elliott’s concept for 2023 as well. However, after Hamilton’s incessant complaints, Mercedes made the change and since has been on the rise.

After Elliott’s failure to conceptualize the 2022 car, the British engineer was replaced by James Allison once again for the top job. Since then the car has been performance on the rise. Elliott explained, “If you deviate from your path of developing a car for high or low driving heights, but want to cover all areas, then you do three test drives a week and you don’t get anywhere. That’s why you have to decide on a direction and stick to it. And then, once you’ve learned something, you can tweak that direction and change it slightly. I think we’ve moved in the right direction for the winter.”
