When it comes to the world of motorsports, there’s no doubt that Formula 1 is a class apart. Built as the fastest regulated land vehicle, the F1 cars are known to be made by similar principles as space shuttles. These vehicles are not only fast but handle well at extremely high speeds. But how fast can they get?

As the pinnacle of motorsport, Formula 1 is known to be all about speed and cutting-edge technology. But when the question arises, What is the top speed of an F1 car, the answer is not that simple.

Formula racing sports come at different tiers. The fastest tier is F1. This means the top speeds of vehicles start at a range of 220mph+. While there is no limitation to how fast a car can get, teams build their cars to strike a perfect balance between Speed and Handling. Currently, the highest top speed an F1 car has reached in a race is 231.52 mph and Juan Pablo Montoya set the record during the 2005 Italian Grand Prix.

Another shattering top speed was reached by Valtteri Bottas during a practice session for the 2016 European Grand Prix. Bottas reportedly reached a top speed of 234.9 mph during a practice session for the 2016 European Grand Prix.

Although the common perception is that F1 cars cross 250mph, there has only been one record of such speed. The 2006 Honda RA106 holds the world record for the fastest F1 car off the track. Driven by Alan van der Merwe, the car touched 246.908 mph during official recording. During testing, van der Merwe achieved an even higher speed of 256.753 mph on one run but couldn’t replicate it on the return run.

The Tradition of pushing the limits that were established by Cooper back in 1959 still beats most modern sports cars today. Here is a list of the fastest F1 cars from each decade up to the 2020s.
