Monaco always gets a bit of a bad reputation nowadays among Formula 1 fans. Granted, the current generation of F1 cars, coupled with the twisty and narrow streets of the principality, has given us some dull Grand Prix. However, the real excitement and drama are delivered on a Saturday. The allure of the Monaco Grand Prix weekend is the Qualifying session. And this year’s Qualifying can be regarded as one of the best we’ve seen in a while! For Lewis Hamilton, though, it’ll be one to forget.

Mercedes brought the highly anticipated upgrade package to Monaco this weekend. While the pace was seemingly improved, other aspects of the team held the 38-year-old back when it came to setting a grid position for tomorrow’s race. In the end, on a track that was evolving with every lap being put in, Hamilton could only manage sixth on the grid. But why was the 7x champion not able to put in another lap that would’ve guaranteed a better starting position at the end of Q3?

Well, as it turns out, the Silver Arrows had apparently not considered this option. The track evolution was evident to all. That being said, Mercedes still opted to fuel the Brit for a single flying lap. This decision did come to bite them in the end, with George Russell also finishing only eight.
