Given how much time F1 drivers spend traveling around the world, they often regret neglecting their families. The seasons are getting longer as more fixtures join the calendar. That makes things even more difficult for them. It is precisely the reason why Fernando Alonso, 41, hasn’t been able to start a family. That, despite all his love for the sport, is the biggest dream of the Asturian driver.
Just last month, Fernando announced his breakup with his girlfriend Andrea Schlager. Schlager, an F1 journalist herself, had made quite a name for herself. A regular in the F1 paddocks, she often conducted interviews with drivers and team bosses. That is perhaps where the two first met and instantly hit it off. But does the Spaniard miss her already?

No other driver has lasted in F1 as long as Fernando has. Soon to turn 42, he is sailing in the twilight of his career. But that is something the experts have been saying for years and the Asturian continues proving them wrong. It is all because of his love for the sport which he revealed in a recent interview. Yet, he chose to put having a family as the ultimate goal.
The New York Times quoted him as saying, “The legacy I will leave will be the love for this sport, so great that I continue to practice it for many years, remaining at a very high level. It was one of the goals I set for myself when I returned.” [Translated using Google]
“I want to have a family. This is the biggest dream of my life. I haven’t gotten there yet due to my lifestyle. It’s something that, when I stop running, I’ll find happiness.”
This is not the first time Alonso has rued not having enough time to start a family because of F1. In an old interview, he revealed how much he loved his job but also unveiled the dark side of the sport.

If a man like Fernando Alonso is not a racing fanatic, we don’t know who is. Even after retiring from F1 (which lasted for just two years), the Spaniard participated in IndyCar, and Dakar Rally, and won the 24-hour Le Mans. And then it happened. He missed being in an F1 car’s cockpit. It did not matter where he would stand on the grid. He just wanted a seat and a seat he got.
But before calling it quits ahead of his supposedly final race, in an FIA press conference, he said, “There are negative aspects of Formula 1, especially if you are 18 years here. You dedicate your entire life to Formula 1. You have no friends, no family, no free time, no privacy, no wife, no kids, no nothing. It’s just full dedication if you want to succeed. So I think I have other priorities right now.”
