The Flying Dutchman not only won his 12th race of the season, but he also registered the second world champion tag to his name. Max Verstappen won the Japanese Grand Prix with a huge margin of 27 seconds from the P2 driver, which was Charles Leclerc at the time. But since the Red Bull driver won fair and square, why was there confusion surrounding championship points and whether Max won the championship or not?

At the very last second of the race, Charles cut a corner and gained an unfair advantage over 3rd place, Sergio Perez. This led to him facing a 5s penalty and getting the P3 spot on the podium. This eventually ended the long wait for Verstappen to clinch his second title. However, there was a lot of confusion whether full or half points would be awarded for a race.

To give some clarity to the matter, an FIA spokesperson told Racefans in a statement, “The rules regarding the reduced points allocation (article 6.5) only apply in the event of race suspension that cannot be resumed.”

“Therefore full points are awarded and Max Verstappen is world champion.”

Before the announcement, even the Red Bull team was not sure about the situation. Verstappen admitted, “It’s incredible at the end of the day that we did win it here.”

“I didn’t know how many points I was going to get and I wanted to go for the fastest lap, but I think the gap was just not safe enough to go for an extra stop,” the Dutchman added.

Not only the driver, but the team boss of Red Bull found himself uncertain. Helmut Marko revealed, “It was a surprise because our statisticians said we needed one more point.”
