Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton ruled F1 from 2014 to 2020. The ruling changed to a contest in 2021 as Max Verstappen stepped up to the challenge. From a contest, it went back to a rule, but in Red Bull‘s favor. And Mercedes’ upgrades too couldn’t prove good enough. And fed up with Verstappen’s dominance, Hamilton said in the media that Red Bull should not be allowed to start working on next year’s car before a certain date. But to his surprise, Toto Wolff has contradicted his statements.

The 7-time champion had made the statements with the intention that no team should dominate the sport this heavily. But coming from him, it sounded ironic because he was dominating the sport for the longest time. And as expected, his statements were met with scoffs of disbelief from Verstappen and Christian Horner. But Hamilton also got an undesirable rejection from his close friend and Mercedes Boss, Toto Wolff, who he should’ve gotten support from.

As per motorsport-Total, Wolff said, “We just have to be better. You can’t complain when one team does a better job than all the others and just dominates with one driver. Then that’s because they deserve it and just did the job well. Provided, of course, that they adhere to the regulations. Both the technical and the sporting and financial.”

As if a cold shoulder from Wolff was not enough, even FIA President Muhammed Ben Sulayem has spoken against Hamilton’s suggestions. He backed Red Bull, saying that just because someone is winning, they can’t be asked to not work on getting more victories. That is against the whole point of healthy competition.

Ben Sulayem said, as quoted by Express, “It is (Verstappen’s) time, it’s Red Bull’s time. What do we do … punish the good kid? No, let’s go and make the other teams good. Nobody’s stopping the other teams from being better. We cannot punish people for being better, for trying harder. That is unfair.”
